What is Spotify’s Automix function? Blend tool allows listeners to play DJ

Spotify users are just learning of the Automix tool, which gives them the power to play DJ on the music streaming site.

There are several new additions to the music streaming site, with the nostalgic music pop up releasing ahead of Spotify Wrapped. But an old function from Spotify is being revived, as interest in its Automix tool peaks.

If you’re looking to seize the reigns and takeover as DJ, or if you want to learn how to blend your playlists, then here’s what you need to know about Spotify’s Automix function.

How does Spotify’s Automix function work?

On Spotify’s website, they describe the Automix as follows: “Some exclusive Spotify playlists blend and auto-mix content, allowing seamless transitions between tracks.”

“Allows smooth transition between songs in a playlist,” the tool is described on the app.

It is part of the music app’s playback function. The Automix tool can be used to blend one song into another if you are listening to a playlist. This gives the effect that your playlist has been mixed, as a DJ would do.

If you are listening to an official Spotify playlist, the Automix function will line up a song that matches the previous one, perfectly blending the two.

Spotify users call Automix function “too repetitive”

Although you might think having a built-in DJ would benefit Spotify users, some have complained about the way the Automix tool functions.

“What is it with Spotify putting absolute garbage automix’s on every one of their playlists it never sounds good (sic),” one Twitter user wrote.

It has been described as “too repetitive” by others:

However, some are a fan of the feature. “Watch this app turn into your favourite DJ in 5 seconds,” one positive user tweeted.

Another described it as their favorite feature on the app.

How to disable Automix

If you are tired of Spotify’s Automix function, you can turn it off. It is automatically enabled for Spotify users, but is simple to remove from your streaming service.

To disable Automix, you need to go to the Spotify app (on your phone or desktop), go to settings, then select the ‘playback’ section. Here, you will see the ‘Automix’ setting.

To remove it from your app, toggle Automix off. Your playlists will then return to playing whole tracks rather than mixing them in their last few seconds with the next song.

New Spotify tools to upgrade your listening experience

Spotify is always on the hunt to improve their streaming site for the listener. This year has seen the app add audiobooks to their platform, as well as acquire viral game sensation Heardle.
