Strange way American people order food at restaurants drives Brits ‘insane’
A British woman finds the way Americans order food at restaurants really odd, and others agree that it ‘drives them insane’.
From the way British people wash their dishes to the tights UK women wear, there are all kinds of things the two countries do differently. However, this one seems to have riled up people the most.
Strange way Americans order food at restaurants
Speaking on TikTok, the woman called Florence explained that she finds it “hilarious” (in a bad way) how Americans say “I’m gonna do” when they are ordering food.
“They’re like ‘I’m gonna do tomato’. What do you mean you’re gonna do? You’re gonna do a tomato? What do you mean?” she said.
“I’m gonna do white rice with chicken,” the TikTok user gave as another example. “What about ‘I’m gonna get some chicken’ or ‘Please can I have chicken and rice?’.”
Rather than saying ‘I will have’ or ‘I would like’, Americans tend to say the word “do” instead, which doesn’t even make grammatical sense.
As explained by the Cambridge Dictionary, the word ‘do’ is a verb used when performing or completing an action. For example, ‘do a dance’. Ordering food is an action, but the thing you are ordering isn’t. For example, you can’t ‘do a tomato’ or ‘do a white rice’.
It doesn’t make any sense, so why do people say it? Well, language is a funny thing that evolves over time. One person starts saying something, another person catches on and all of a sudden everyone is saying it, even though it’s technically wrong.
Here’s another example. Loads of people say ‘of’ instead of ‘have’, like ‘could of gone shopping’ instead of ‘could have gone shopping’. After time, it becomes ingrained into our vocabulary and people don’t even realise it’s not correct.

In the comments, other British people are saying the way of ordering food really aggravates them too.
One person wrote: “It bugs me soooo much.”
“It drives me insane,” said another.
A third person added: “This bothers me way too much.”
Another noted that Americans do the same thing with travel. They will say, ‘I’m doing Thailand’ rather than ‘I’m going to Thailand’.
However, Brits aren’t innocent in all this either. Another notes that people in the UK love to say they are ordering ‘a Chinese’ rather than ‘Chinese food’.
