Brit woman perplexed that Americans sleep without bedding essential
Most bedding essentials are common worldwide, but there’s one thing Americans believe isn’t a necessity that Europeans can’t go to sleep without.
Americans and Europeans differ in several aspects of life, which often comes across as a cultural shock. As with boiling water and storing milk, Brits can’t go to bed without one item that isn’t a priority elsewhere.

Brit woman shocked that duvet isn’t common in America
What goes into the bedding is mostly determined by the weather and our living conditions. A British woman was shocked to see most Americans prefer blankets over duvets.
A duvet is a blanket-like bedding item to keep you warm and comfortable. It’s made of a soft fabric with fluffy filling such as down feathers, wool, or cotton.
Europeans also cover their duvet with a duvet cover, which keeps it clean longer and only requires washing of the outer layer.
The viral TikTok video with over 2.7 million views has attracted all kinds of comments as the content creator expresses her disbelief in the American way of sleeping.
Phoebe says she can’t believe Americans “don’t use a duvet” and the majority use a blanket to sleep. “Do you not feel like you are going to get literally assaulted by the mysterious clown man in the corner of your room,” she asks, before expressing her own fear about sleeping under a single layer of blanket.
Despite Phoebe’s hilarious take, some Americans have argued in the comments that their decision to use or not use a duvet or a comforter narrows down to the weather conditions.
They prefer sleeping under a blanket in summer while some use a comforter in cold winters. But duvet cover is still an alien concept for many Americans.
Phoebe strongly believes she wouldn’t get 8 hours of rest if she slept without a duvet, mostly because she “doesn’t feel safe.”
Americans’ responses are hilarious
Some Americans were prompted to Google what a duvet is after listening to Phoebe’s rant, while others clarified that they call the same “comforter” in the U.S.
“We have comforters. think of it like a duvet except you can’t take the inners out to wash the cover. you have to wash the whole thing,” explained one user.
Another added: “I barely sleep with a blanket with how hot it is.” A third user wrote: “I barely sleep with a blanket with how hot it is.”
