Americans confused by strange way British people wash their dishes

There are lots of cultural differences between the US and UK from the humor to the food eaten and the way people dress.

Another thing that’s different is how people wash their dishes, which has left Americans befuddled on TikTok this month.

Strange way Brits wash their dishes

It all started when a popular British TikTok user who goes by the name Goonie Dad shared a video of things in his UK kitchen that would “send Americans into a coma”.

He walked around the room showing differences, like having the washing machine in the kitchen and keeping sauces in the cupboard. When he got to the sink, he filmed his washing up bowl, which quickly had people asking: “Why do you need a tub in the sink when your sink is a tub?”

Across the UK, it’s pretty normal to put a large plastic container inside your sink that you fill up with water and soap and wash the dishes in.

There are many different reasons for using one. Mainly, it allows you to rinse off dirty food and pour it down the side of the bowl so the water doesn’t get murky. The food remnants go straight down the plughole while the water remains clean and soapy.

It also acts as a noise insulator against the metal sink, stopping china plates and pans banging against it. The bowl creates a softer surface to stop glasses from breaking too, and protects the sink from scratches.

In another video, the TikTok user showed himself filling up the washing up bowl, which only made people across the pond even more confused.

“I just can’t believe you don’t have washing up bowls,” he said. “That’s the bit that’s blown my mind, they just don’t exist in America?”

Americans think it’s totally ludicrous

Most Americans think the washing up bowl is absurd, with one person commenting: “So…do you put a tub in your bathtub before you take a bath?”

“Why a ‘washing up bowl’ when the sink IS the washing up bowl?” said another.

A third person added: “England is like that old man that refuses to get a phone and is angry at ppl that can control their lights with an app.”

However, some people in the US are revealing that they do exist there, but they are called dishpans and no one really uses them.

Others are more concerned by the fact Brits call dish soap washing up liquid, which someone said “seems so over complicated”.
