World’s ‘quickest’ personality test has a set of instructions
In a YouTube video titled ‘How suggestible are you?’ by Quirkology, psychologist Richard Wiseman performs an imagination test.
Richard Wiseman is a professor of the public understanding of psychology at the University of Hertfordshire who has written several psychology books and created popular psychology-based YouTube videos. The Quirkology series contains several serious, and scientific, online experiments.
Personality is the combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual’s distinctive character. American Psychological Association suggests that it refers to the enduring characteristics and behavior that comprise a persons unique adjustment to life.
The Decision Lab explains that people are considered suggestible if they act or accept suggestions based on the input of others.
Richard starts by welcoming viewers to the ‘world’s quickest personality test,’ before explaining a set of simple instructions.
Firstly, you must hold out your hands in front of you, making sure that they are level, and then close your eyes.
Next, imagine there is a helium balloon attached to the fingers of your right hand, which is gently pulling your right hand up into the air. At the same time, imagine a pile of books placed on your left hand. The books are weighing down on your left hand and pushing it toward the floor.
Simultaneously, the balloon is pulling the right hand up, and the books are pushing the left hand down. Enjoy any images that float into your mind while imagining these images, and remember that your hands are being pushed and pulled.
When you open up your eyes, the psychologist reveals that the position of your hands has a specific meaning.
If your hands are far apart, then you tend to have a good imagination. You are sensitive, intuitive, and you can easily become absorbed in books and films.
However, if your hands are still level when you open your eyes, then you are more down to Earth. Your personality is more logical, as well as more analytical, and this means you may enjoy puzzles and games.
Personality test catches people out and the results are telling
Richard finished the personality test by revealing: “And if you saw an image of a puppy, then you just tend to be a little bit suspicious…”
Wondering what the puppy comment refers to? Well, while most people are playing the video with their eyes closed, as instructed, Richard also addressed the people who did not choose to close their eyes.
As he is giving listeners the instructions about the balloon and the books, the psychologist also holds up cards reading “OK, so you didn’t close your eyes, that’s okay, but I don’t want you to get bored, so here’s something to look at” before the final card shows an image of a puppy.
You catch the video back to spot the image of the cute puppy, but if you saw it the first time inside your head, then this probably indicates you do not have a very suggestible personality, since you don’t easily act on or accept suggestions based on the input of others.
