Woman in ‘controversial relationship’ explains the rules she and her boyfriend follow

Relationship rules are subjective. What works for one doesn’t necessarily have the same effect on the rest. For one couple, a controversial approach to love is what keeps them together.

TikTok user Lex and her boyfriend follow a set of rather unconventional rules in their relationship, which isn’t as creepy as giving strangers fake phone numbers but is still debatable by conventional standards.

Couple follows controversial dating rules

Lex makes it clear in her video that people may not find the rules she and her boyfriend of two and a half years follow acceptable but the arrangement has worked well for them. She lists four such rules stirring debate online.

The first and perhaps the most controversial rule of all allows the TikTok user to accept free drinks from strangers at the bar, as long as she does “nothing” with them. This could include not leading them or leaving the bar together.

In fact, her boyfriend supports her in this as she can save anywhere between $13 to $15 on each drink without doing any damage to their relationship. Similarly, Lex’s boyfriend, who is a bartender, can flirt with his female customers for extra tips, which he uses to buy his girlfriend dinner.

Of course, he wouldn’t call any of the girls or do anything beyond flirting over the counter, she claims. The third rule may or may not be a big deal depending on your rapport with your significant other.

Lex’s best lady friend and her boyfriend have a Snapchat streak, given to two users with the most interaction on the app. While others may be bothered by the closeness the best friend and her boyfriend share, she’s fully secure about it.

The fourth rule involves unapologetically appreciating good-looking and attractive celebrities in front of each other without getting jealous. Lex says this is acceptable from both ends as long as the person they are ogling is “unattainable.”

People are divided over unpopular opinion

While some think the TikTok couples’ rules of relationship are “progressive” and scream trust, others argue it’s not worth risking their relationship for extra tips or just to save money on drinks.

When one user said: “I honestly think free drinks is valid”, another argued: “The drink thing for me, I wouldnt worry about trust but rather leading the guy on and then him getting mad when he thought it was going somewhere, even if I save money its not worth that.”

“This progressively got worse,” wrote one, when another said: “The fact that people arent trusting enough with their partners to do these things is the real controversy in my opinion.”
