Getting engaged is one of the biggest moments of your life, but a quarter of people get the proposal all wrong.

From a grand gesture in front of the Eiffel Tower to a cosy engagement at home on Christmas Day or a lovely stroll along a tropical beach, everyone’s idea of the perfect proposal is different – but there’s one thing 25% of people agree is a big mistake.

Mistake a quarter of people make when proposing

A new survey by the greetings card marketplace thortful asked 2,000 people across the UK what they thought of their engagement and a quarter of people said they didnt like their proposal as it was in public.

Getting down on one knee in a public place, like a restaurant or crowded street, seems to be the worst mistake a partner can possibly make, and 1 in 5 people said their public proposal was cringey and awkward.

In 2017, a study by The Knot found that 24% of proposals took place in a public location, with outdoor spaces like gardens, parks and zoos being the most popular, but it’s not the place that’s the issue – it’s the people.

Popping the question on a secluded beach or at the top of a mountain is technically a public place, but it’s the crowds of bystanders watching and clapping that those getting engaged find embarrassing and cringy.

Wedding planner says public proposals are ‘inappropriate’

Thortful spoke to wedding planner Chloe Williams who said public proposals are “loud, busy, and generally inappropriate”.

“The most thoughtful and generally more original proposals are the ones that are intimate, private, personal to your other half and have some creativity involved,” she continued.

Public proposals with flash mobs and live musicians always look great in the movies, but in reality, it leaves the partner disappointed and embarrassed.

Williams said keeping it as simple as possible is the best thing to do, making it a private and special moment between the two of you.

Follow these tips for the perfect proposal

To plan the perfect proposal, Hitched says you should always consider the story. After getting engaged, what’s the first thing you do? Go and tell your family and friends every detail. While planning, think about each little stage to make sure it’s their dream engagement they can’t wait to beam about.

Another tip is to incorporate something extra special, like a sentimental feature that’s unique to your relationship. Whether it’s getting down on one knee at the place where you met or inscribing a date into the inside of the engagement ring, little touches make the world of difference.

Always considering what they would want, planning your words beforehand and organizing a celebration for afterwards also make for the perfect proposal. Plus, don’t shout to the rooftops. Keep the circle who know you are proposing as small as possible to make it extra special.
