Wellness author shares a 3-minute spiced milk recipe for better sleep

Drink this to sleep better tonight, Sabrina Bawa says at the beginning of her video. Her recipe for spiced milk takes just 4 ingredients and a few minutes to prepare. She’s the author of Detox To Glow.

First, pour a cup of plant-based milk into a saucepan, or whichever receptacle you like to use to heat up liquids. Add between a quarter and half a teaspoon of cinnamon powder, along with half a teaspoon of ghee.

Heat this mixture so that it simmers for 2-3 minutes, Sabrina says, before letting it cool for a few minutes. Then, add half a teaspoon of honey and mix well.

Ive been making spiced warm milk at night ever since I can remember. This variation is the one that works best for me.

But is there science to back it up?

Benefits of cinnamon, ghee, and honey for sleep quality

A 2022 study into the potential of cinnamon extract as an anti-insomnia medication notes that cinnamon has been used for generations in overcoming various health problems, including to help overcome insomnia.

The researchers investigated the impact of cinnamon extract on participants serotonin and melatonin levels and found they went up. They concluded that cinnamon extract has potential as an anti-insomnia medication.

Ghee may not be a staple in your diet, but it is hugely popular in the culinary traditions of the Middle East and India. Its a variation of clarified butter, made by heating cow milk butter until the water evaporates, leaving milk solids behind.

Its almost entirely lactose-free and contains only trace amounts of casein. For this reason, its a good source of fat for people who are lactose intolerant or are allergic to dairy. Ghee is also a good source of vitamins, antioxidants, and healthy fats generally, according to WebMD.

A version of Sabrinas recipe appears on the website of Dr Anthony Salzarulo, a New York-based holistic health doctor. He writes that ghee can work wonders for stress reduction, anxiety, and insomnia.

People have also been known to massage ghee onto their feet to help them sleep better. However, there isnt much in the way of scientific literature to back this up. On the subject of honey, meanwhile, some say it improves your sleep immeasurably… by stopping your partner from snoring.
