Reasons athletes didnt make it to Olympics, from headbutting diving board to faceplanting after flip

A trend on TikTok sees amateur athletes share the reason they didn’t get into the Olympics, often attaching videos of failing, faceplanting, falling, and other potentially disastrous mistakes.

The 2024 Paris Olympics is in full swing, with athletes venturing to the European city to represent their countries. People are celebrating the event in several ways, with McDonald’s releasing a foreign food menu in France, and one woman changing her Tinder settings to match with Olympians.

The new Olympic trend is comedy gold

As millions watch professionals from across the world battle it out for shiny pieces of metal, others have taken to TikTok to celebrate those who didn’t quite make it to Paris, France.

The collection of videos, crudely nicknamed the ‘Why I didn’t make it to the Olympics’ trend, sees athletes share their ultimate physical fails.

For @zofranluvr, that failure came the moment she attempted to drive from what appeared to be a 3-meter board. The bounces started off strong, as did her initial jump and subsequent flips, but disaster came when she approached the water. Rather than diving into it, she splatted on the top.

“On a brighter note, you are on track for the 2028 Paralympic Games in LA!” one person said underneath, as another wrote, “I had the same reaction as everyone in the room.”

Another diver, @Mandiemon40, experienced similar hardships as she attempted to do a backward dive from a 3-metre platform. Unfortunately, just moments before she attempted the trick, her toes slipped and she faceplanted the diving board.

“Is the diving board from SHiEn?” someone joked in the comments.

There are dozens of similar diving videos on TikTok currently, but that doesn’t mean non-divers aren’t also jumping on the trend.

The gymnastics videos are by far the funniest

While most of us could watch diving blunders all day, you might be more partial to gymnastics fails from TikTok’s ‘Why I didn’t make it to the Olympics’ trend.

With over 400k likes, @mermaidmackenzie can rest easy knowing over 9 million people (more people than the city of Madrid) have seen her slamming into a balance beam. Though the cartwheel itself seemed correct, she failed to stick the landing and soon found herself on the floor.

Gymnast @streganonar had similar luck during her floor routine as she attempted to complete what looked to be two front flips and a roll. The first flip went brilliantly, but then she fell to the floor with a thud while attempting the second.

“This gives good context for those of us who arent in gymnastics&its not as easy as they make it seem,” someone wrote underneath, as another said, “I cant stop watching Im so sorry.”
