Pantone Color Of The Years many-hued history explored

The Pantone Colour Institute has chosen a Color Of The Year every year since 2000, but the NJ-based companys choice for next year is a little different �its new. Heres a quick look at the history of Pantones colours of the year �how do they choose them, and have any of them been of particular significance?

What is Pantones Color Of The Year for 2022, and what makes it special?

On Wednesday, global colour authority Pantone unveiled their colour of the year for 2022: Very Peri.

Very Peri combines blue and red  some might call it purple. But what makes it unusual is that its a brand new addition to Pantones colour library. 

This is the first year in the Pantone Color Institutes history of selecting a Color Of The Year that its developed one especially �usually, the company selects one from its back catalogue of colours.

“It was really important for us to come up with a new colour, executive director Leatrice Eiseman told CNN, because we have a very new vision of the world now.

She described Very Peri as literally the happiest and the warmest of all the blue hues. Peri is a shortening of periwinkle, a colour in the blue and violet family. Its name comes from a type of herb with blue-violet flowers.

A brief history of Pantones Color Of The Year

For the past 22 years, Pantone has hosted, in a European capital, a secret meeting of colour experts �representatives from different nations colour standards groups.

Two days of deliberation later, the group selects a colour for the following year. Pantones first ever Color Of The Year was Cerulean, which Merriam-Webster defines as resembling the blue of the sky.

2010s colour was Turquoise; in 2011, it was Honeysuckle, which Pantone described as a colour for all seasons: courageous, confident, vital.�

Honeysuckle derives its positive qualities from a powerful bond to its mother colour red, Eiseman explained at the time, the most physical, viscerally alive hue in the spectrum.

Last year, it was Classic Blue, an enduring blue that highlights our desire for a dependable and stable foundation.�

Do other colour companies name a colour of the year?

Yes. Almost three months ago, British colour brand Dulux named Bright Skies as its Colour Of The Year for 2022.�

Like Pantone, Duluxs choice attempts to capture the zeitgeist. Bright Skies, the company claims, perfectly captures the optimism and desire for a fresh start that is the mood of the moment”.
