Most Americans think that summer grilling is an art form

With summer now in full swing, millions of Americans are heading out into their gardens for the age-old tradition of grilling, though one group seems to be omitted from the fun-packed activity.

While some Americans would prefer to curl up in front of the fire with a good book, most enjoy battling the heat during the summer months. Whether you’re a gardener with a green thumb for propagation, or a fitness freak with a love of garden workout equipment, June onwards provides ample opportunities for fun and relaxation.

There’s arguably nothing more summer-centric than firing up the grill for an arrangement of meats, vegetables, fish, and just about anything else you want to throw on there. Though cleaning your BBQ or grill can be a huge pain, there’s a reason that 84% of Americans turn to their grill during hotter times of the year.

In a survey conducted by Talker Research and commissioned by Perdue Farms, 2,000 Americans were quizzed on their grilling habits and beliefs.

As a fourth-generation family-owned food and agriculture company, we know meals bring people together, said Perdue’s Jody Hallman. During the summer, that often happens around the grill. We believe grilling is an equal-opportunity activity that all members of the household can and should enjoy.

Interestingly, the survey identified that women are the “unsung heroes” of the grilling world, with over 50% believing that men still dominate the hobby.

But that doesn’t mean Americans want it to stay that way as 53% said it’s outdated and 77% said that women deserve more notoriety for their grilling skills.

Despite the very clear divide when it comes to grilling and gender, Americans are unified in their belief that the method of cooking is an art form. 72% of women agreed with the statement compared to 82% of men.

Besides the shocking difference in male and female grilling attitudes, the survey also delved into general grilling opinions like meat choices and fuel sources.

When it comes to the motives behind America’s grill culture, 63% said they enjoy it because grilled food is their favorite kind. A further 51% also enjoy eating outside, which is but one of the many mental-health-enhancing activities to do outside.

As you might expect, most Americans (72%) said burgers were the must-buy grilling food, followed by hotdogs (60%) and steak (59%). The fourth most popular food to grill was chicken breast (46%), followed by ribs (42%) and fish (27%).

If women are the unsung heroes of the grill, chicken is the underdog of grilled proteins, Hallman added. Its versatile whether you want to toss on some wings or grill the whole bird, chicken is there for you for any occasion, allowing you to personalize the experience during preparation and provide a delicious meal for a weeknight family dinner or a weekend backyard barbeque.
