Identical twins share 8 crazy ‘fun facts’

The two girls are identical twins and also mirror twins, which means they have opposite features that mirror each other.

1. They have the same DNA

Like most identical twins, both of them share exactly the same DNA, so a sample of their blood or saliva would be the same.

2. If they married identical twins, their kids would be siblings

If they married another set of identical twins and had children, both children would be full siblings. How strange!

3. They don’t have the same fingerprints

However, they don’t have the same fingerprints. That means they can’t unlock each other’s phones with their thumbs, but can with Face ID.

4. They have opposite cowlicks

One of the mirror twin features they have is a cowlick that turns the opposite way. This is a piece of hair that grows at a different angle than the rest.

5. They can both lift one eyebrow

The pair can also both lift one of their eyebrows, and they are opposite too. So, one of them can lift the left one while the other can do the right.

6. They can lift their lip on one side

Keeping with the same theme, they can only lift their lips on one side. One twin can lift the left side of their mouth and the other can only do the right again.

7. Their teeth are also opposite

When they visited an orthodontist, the twins were told that their teeth were practically the same, but you guessed it, opposite! They both have a small front tooth on different sides.

8. They both have scoliosis

Finally, the pair both have a condition called scoliosis which is where the spine twists and curves to the side. However, one twists to the left and the other to the right.

1 in 250 pregnancies result in twins

Around 1 in 250 pregnancies result in identical twins, which occurs when a single fertilized egg divides in two, NHS explains. This creates two babies with the same genes, which causes them to look the same.

Identical twins are always the same sex. So if your twins are identical, you’ll have two girls or two boys. However, non-identical twins can be different sexes. They occur when two different eggs are fertilized and implant into the womb and are the same as two normal siblings.

One-third of all twins will be identical and two-thirds non-identical. They do not run in families, but some people are more likely to have twins than others. This includes certain ethnic groups, such as Nigerians, people over 35 and those who have had a baby through IVF.
