‘Diagnosed sociopath reveals 10 weaknesses she has to live with on a daily basis

Sociopathy and its cousins psychopathy and narcissism are fascinating personality types, each with its unique blend of characteristics. It can be easy to forget that they create challenges not only for other people but for those they afflict as well.

One self-proclaimed diagnosed narcissistic sociopath  as in, shes been diagnosed with both antisocial personality disorder (also called sociopathy) and narcissistic personality disorder has taken to TikTok to dispel any illusions we may have had about the emotional experience of a sociopathic person and the toll it can take on their mental health, as well as other people’s.

Diagnosed sociopath and narcissist details 10 struggles sociopathic people often have

Deltas bio states that she has received diagnoses for both antisocial personality disorder and narcissistic personality disorder. Shes 26 and posts on TikTok under the username dammitdelta. Ditto on Instagram.

She lists the following 10 things as weaknesses sociopaths tend to have. A brief roundup of how her list compares to standard medical advice and information follows.

  1. Difficulty planning ahead. Its extremely hard for me to think about the future. Im so focused on instant gratification and my own personal pleasure in the moment, she says.
  2. Ostracised by society. Sociopaths “fail to conform to social norms and follow authority. We hate being told what to do, and if we dont want to follow a rule, we wont follow it. As a result, she says, they’re likely to end up in prison, get fired, or be socially outcasted.
  3. Difficulty forming meaningful relationships. Bonding is possible, but it doesnt happen very often. Most of our relationships are superficial, based entirely on us receiving resources from a person, rather than wanting to connect. Dissatisfaction, depression, and loneliness are the likely consequences of this.
  4. Difficulty learning from past mistakes. I cant tell you the number of times that I have made the same mistake over and over again, she says, and yet she explains that she finds it impossible to make the necessary changes.
  5. Reckless behavior. I struggle to think through the consequences of my actions before I act. If I want to do something, I do it, and I dont care what happens. This has got me into a lot of problems.
  6. Reliance on manipulation and exploitation of other people. Due to our deceptive nature, its easy for us to lose the trust of the people around us, thus stopping us from getting what we want.”
  7. Arrogance. We can be very grandiose,” she says. “We tend to view ourselves as superior to everybody else. This can inhibit growth, and it puts a dent in your social life, she adds.
  8. Emotional suppression. Sociopaths suppress their emotions. This leads to various mental and physical health problems. Suppressing your emotions is extremely unhealthy. For us,” however, “its second nature.
  9. Emotional instability. Sociopaths are emotionally unstable. Were dramatic and erratic. We struggle immensely with impulse control and controlling our anger and aggression. Some are also sadistic, she adds, which drives the wedge even further between sociopathic people and neurotypical people.
  10. Pathological trust issues and paranoia. Many of us have deeply rooted trust issues stemming from childhood trauma. Being skeptical and untrusting of other people can be a good thing, she admits, as its a defense mechanism. “But not when its taken to the extreme. … I view the world as eat or be eaten,” she explains. “I naturally assume the worst of everybody.

How Deltas list compares to standard medical information about sociopathy

Mayo Clinic defines antisocial personality disorder as a mental health condition in which a person consistently shows no regard for right and wrong and ignores the rights and feelings of others.

People with ASPD tend to deliberately make other people angry or upset and manipulate or treat others harshly or with cruel indifference, it adds. They lack remorse or do not regret their behavior.

They may lie, behave violently or impulsively, and have problems with drug and alcohol use. They have difficulty consistently meeting responsibilities related to family, work, or school.

It lists the following symptoms and behavioral patterns as common among diagnosed sociopaths:

  • Dishonesty for personal gain.
  • Deliberately ignoring right and wrong.
  • Using charisma and wit to manipulate other people.
  • Lack of sensitivity to others feelings and emotions.
  • General sense of superiority.
  • Hostility, aggression, violence, or threatening behaviors.
  • Absence of guilt regarding harmful actions.
  • No regard for the safety of others or self.
  • Acting irresponsibly when it comes to work or financial commitments.

There is a lot of overlap between Deltas list and Mayo Clinics. Deltas has a personal feel to it because it is grounded in her claimed lived experience, whereas Mayo Clinics is, for want of a better word, clinical  sparse, detached, objective.

Not everyone will experience ASPD in the same way. Moreover, someone with a double diagnosis such as Delta may have difficulty distinguishing between the symptoms of one condition and those of another. However, hopefully, the two lists given here offer some glimpse into the lived experience of a person diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder.
