County in Florida hasbanned dictionaries because of’sexual’ descriptions

The Escambia County Public School District, in the Florida Panhandle, has pulled five dictionaries from their library because of ‘sexual’ descriptions.

In 2023, there were several books, stories, and characters that were banned by the schools and things appear to be the same in 2024. However, the biggest shock that has come to people on social media is hearing the news about dictionaries being banned.

Why are the dictionaries being banned?

The books are being banned to ensure the schools are complying with the states new sex education law which prohibits books describing sexual content. Among many, dictionaries are also said to be removed from libraries to ensure the law is followed.

As per reports, the Escambia County Public School District has already removed five dictionaries, eight encyclopedias, and The Guinness Book of World Records.

Apart from this, biographies ofBeyonc, Lady Gaga, Oprah Winfrey, Nicki Minaj,Thurgood Marshall, and more are also being reviewed to ensure they are not breaking any laws.

Other books that are being reviewed

Other books that have been put under the review category are Anne FranksDiary of a Young Girl,The Adventures and the Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes, Agatha ChristiesDeath on the Nile, The Princess Diaries, Killing JesusandKilling Reagan by Bill OReilly, and many more.

At the moment, over 1000 books are being reviewed to ensure they are not breaking the new law. Hearing this, the writers group PEN America, publisher Penguin Random House, and authors whose books were banned in the district decided to take matters into their own hands and sued the district.

As of now, a final verdict for this has not been announced.

Famous books have been banned in the past

This is not the first time a government has decided to ban books. Back in 2023, there were nearly 50 books that were banned. Twilight, which even turned into a movie, is among the books that were banned due to its sexual content.

‘The Odyssey’ by Homer, ‘Lord of the Flies’ by William Golding, ‘A Light in the Attic’ by Shel Silverstein, ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ by Stephen Chbosky, ‘Goosebumps’(series), by R.L. Stine, and others were among the books that were banned.
