British womancantfathombig lifestyle change American teenagers do that UK teens dont

Americans and Brits do things differently and there’s no arguing about that. Certain traditions and practices unique to each culture don’t make sense to people living elsewhere.

The three American things a British woman points out aren’t anything like the less-important aspects of life, such as different ways to boil water or store milk. These define American culture.

3 things about Americans that ‘confuse’ a Brit

Phoebe is a British woman living in the U.S. Her TikTok videos mostly talk about the cultural shocks she has experienced in the foreign country, including a bedding essential that most Americans don’t use.

In one of her latest videos, she discusses three things specific to American culture, which don’t make sense to her.

Homecoming

Homecoming is one of the biggest annual events in American schools, when students, alumni, and the community get together to celebrate school spirit with football games, dance, and more.

Phoebe finds the tradition “strange” coming from the U.K., where the occasion unique to Americans isn’t observed. She says her only knowledge of homecoming is from Hollywood movies.

Longest commutes

The other thing about Americans that shocks the TikTok user is the average daily commute, which can amount to hours. It’s common among Americans to spend hours every day on the road to get to different parts of the city.

Several TikTok users from America have seconded Phoebe’s thoughts about long commutes as they spend hours daily only to go to the office and return home.

One commented: “You can drive 13 hours in Texas and still be in Texas!”. Another user offered a more logical explanation: “Well the US is a lot larger than the UK so driving one hour to work is nothing.”

Moving out at 18

Parents in the U.S. expect their children to move out of the house upon turning 18, which the British lady says isn’t common in her country.

A report by the European Commission says young people across Europe leave their parental homes on average at the age of 26.4 years – no wonder the TikTok users couldn’t fathom the fact that young adults in the U.S. were on their own by the age of 18.
