American woman confused by ‘teeny tiny baby fridges’ in British homes that ‘make no sense’

There are lots of things that differ between the UK and US, from the vocabulary to the fashion and the humor. Another thing is the fridges!

An American woman living in England has gone viral on TikTok after sharing how strange she finds the “teeny tiny baby fridges” they have.

‘Teeny tiny baby fridge’ makes no sense

She shared a video of the small white refrigerator in her British home, which slots in perfectly underneath a high cupboard.

“Everywhere we’ve lived in the UK came with this like half fridge,” she said. “We literally can’t even buy a bigger one in our current house because of the kitchen design.”

Everyone in the US has those huge silver “mega fridges” that hold so much food, and some people do have them in the UK, but they are nowhere near as popular.

Instead, people tend to have a narrow fridge freezer – and the American exclaimed: “I don’t know how people are fitting everything in there!”

She added that hers is “stuffed” when they go out and get their groceries, but people in England have a very easy solution to this – don’t buy as much.

‘We don’t over buy groceries here’

In the comments, Brits are explaining that it’s not normal to do huge grocery shops that last weeks and weeks in the UK.

Instead, you do your shopping for that week and it fits perfectly inside the refrigerator. Then, you do another shop the next week.

Also, food use by dates often aren’t as long as in the States, so you buy something, eat it up and then buy more when it’s run out.

“We don’t really over buy groceries here. We just buy what we need for the week and it all fits perfectly fine,” one person wrote.

Another said: “Don’t need a massive fridge, everything will go out of date before you get to it.”

“We shop smaller and more frequently as stuff goes off quickly due to no preservatives,” a third person agreed.

Americans live further from grocery stores

Americans are clapping back with the fact that many don’t live very close to grocery stores, especially in rural areas.

If you live an hour away from your nearest Walmart, you stock up for weeks so you don’t have to go back for a while.

Someone else commented: “Most Americans live an hour or more from the grocery store. So we can only shop about once a month.”

“In the US, many of us don’t have that luxury. We can live an hour or more away from the store and can only go grocery shopping about once a month. So we have to stock up. Hence bigger fridges,” said another.
