8 things American found strange about her British home after moving to London

After moving country, it can take a while to get used to their way of life. Even America and England do all kinds of things differently, from food to fashion and vocabulary. Another big contrast is the houses.

An American woman currently living in London has gone viral on TikTok after sharing some of the many things she found really strange about her British home after moving – from the towel rails to the light switches.

8 things American found strange about her British home

In the video, the woman called Sarah walked around her home and pointed out all the things that confused her after moving across the pond.

1. The towel rails

The first thing was the towel rail in the bathroom. She went to hang her towel on it, and one thing really caught her by surprise – it was hot!

“Of course I burnt my hand on it the first day I got here because I had no idea it gets hot,” she said, unaware that British ones are usually heated.

2. The microwaves

Another thing that she didn’t understand when moving to the UK was how to use the microwave oven in her kitchen.

American microwaves tend to be a lot simpler, while British ones have so many different buttons and settings.

3. The shop TK Maxx

To this day, she is still really confused about why the shop TJ Maxx has a different name in England – TK Maxx!

If you’re wondering, the name was changed in the UK so it wouldn’t be confused with another retail chain called T. J. Hughes.

4. The light switches

The American woman also struggled to find light switches when going into rooms, because they are in a different place.

In the US, switches are always inside the room, but British ones are often on the wall just outside of the room instead.

5. The shower doors

“I’m confused on why your shower doors don’t go all the way to the wall,” she continued. “What is the point of this?”

British showers are often inside the bath tub, and the shower screen only goes half way along so the floor still gets wet.

6. The washer and dryer

She also struggled to find the washer and dryer when she first moved into her British home. Where are they?

While Americans tend to have a laundry room, British people have their washer and dryer inside a kitchen cupboard!

7. The outlet switches

Another thing that took a while to get used to was the fact that the outlets have switches on them to cut off the electricity.

This safety precaution doesn’t exist in the US, and she always forgets to turn the switch back on to charge her phone.

8. The fake door knobs

A lot of British front doors have fake doorknobs on them. They don’t actually turn or have any use – they’re simply there for decoration.

Another American woman is confused by the ‘teeny tiny baby fridges’ in British homes that don’t even fit all your food inside.

9. All the walking

“I’m an American in London. My feet hurt at the end of every day because I’m not used to walking this much,” she concluded.

People in London love to walk everywhere if they can, including work and school, while most American towns and cities were built for cars.
