5 weird things in British homes that ‘still don’t make sense’ to an American
There are some big differences between life in America and England, including the way things are done around the home.
An American man has shared the weird things in his British apartment that ‘still don’t make sense’ after years of living there – from the kitchen tap to the toilet.

5 weird things in British homes
Speaking on TikTok, Kjordy, who describes himself as a “meer Yankee living amongst Brits,” said these are some of the biggest contrasts between US and UK houses.
“I’ve been here for almost four years and these things still throw me off,” he revealed.

1. There is no dryer
The first strange difference is that most British homes don’t have a tumble dryer next to their washing machine. Instead, people tend to dry their clothes on drying racks which they put up somewhere in the home.
“Where’s the dryer you might ask?” he said while opening up the cupboard next to his washer to reveal a freezer. “Here there’s no tumble dryers. You have to hang things up like it’s the 18th century bro. It’s a struggle.”
2. The taps are different
Next up, the internet user said that the water pressure that comes out of your kitchen tap is “insane” in the UK compared to America. He even demonstrated by turning on his tap, revealing a strong jet of water.
Some other differences he noticed about the taps is that the cold water doesn’t get very cold, but the hot water is boiling hot to the point where you can actually see steam coming out and it burns when you touch it.
Americans on TikTok are confused by the strange way British people wash their dishes this month too.
3. Plug sockets have switches
The plug sockets are also different in the UK compared to the US. They have switches on them to turn the electricity on and off, isolating the circuit from the mains as a safety precaution. However, outlets don’t have that in America.
4. Toilets can be separate
The TikTok user was shocked when he walked into his UK apartment to find that the toilet is in a completely separate room next to the washroom. It’s common in old English houses and useful when two people want to use the toilet and have a shower at the same time!
5. There is no ice dispenser
Finally, most households in the UK don’t have ice dispensers on their fridges, but almost every household does in the States.
“Last but not least, RIP a cold drink. What, where’s the ice machine?” he asked while tapping the front of his refrigerator frustratedly.
Their houses might be a little strange, but the English certainly do some things better. This American woman found out the British way of making hot cocoa is ‘worlds better’ after 25 years!
