3 smart responses to insults to preserve your peace of mind, says argument expert
Insults always get the best of us. To say something mean and snarky seems satisfying, but a response that isn’t thought through can be more damaging.
Although keeping quiet when you’re the target of an insult isn’t healthy, saying the right things can diffuse the situation and give you power over the other party. An argument expert shares three smart responses to someone being rude to you.

3 responses to an insult from an argument expert
Previously, we shared three powerful comebacks that would make anyone regret insulting you. While not saying anything can make the other person question their decision to come at you, well-thought-out responses can have a similar effect.
Asking for more
Argument expert Jefferson Fisher says “asking for more” is the best response to an insult. You can ask them if they have “anything else to say or add” to what has already been said.
This shows you from a position of strength and confidence as you aren’t letting the insults affect you and you’re strong enough to take more. Doing this will only bother the person being rude.
Words that diffuse tension
He also suggests using words that can diffuse the tension. When someone hurls insults at you, say “weird, odd, awkward.”
This makes the person insulting you question their approach by showing them “what they intended to throw didn’t land at all.”
Say ‘You’re worked up’
Staying calm and composed in chaos is a superpower and you can use it to your benefit when someone tries to put you down.
You should tell them they seem “worked up” instead, while you come across as unbothered by anything you’re subjected to.
The argument expert swears by this technique because “when you say ‘you sound worked up’, what they hear is ‘you sound emotional’.”
This prompts them to lower their energy before saying anything else, while you remain calm and in control of the situation.
