Chinese ear cleaning service is dream for anyone who uses Q Tips

If you are all too familiar with ignoring medical advice and digging around your ear with a Q-tip, then youll love one womans experience with an intense Chinese beauty treatment.

For every piece of golden advice on TikTok, like Abbey Sharpes brutal Lunchly takedown, there are dozens of videos like the prison cooking tutorial. They are silly, and somewhat pointless, but do start wider cultural conversations. Another example might be the international baked potato incident.

They used seven different tools to dig around her ear

I got my ears cleaned in a park in China and this is what came out of my ears, the traveler said in a TikTok that has since amassed 2.6 million views and over 200k likes.

Chicago native Jenny (@spoonfulofjenny) was vacationing in China when she visited the People’s Park in the Huangpu District of central Shanghai. The area is known for its beauty, which includes stunning displays of nature, fancy tea ceremonies, boat rides, and face-changing opera shows.

Admitting that she was getting her ears cleaned for Instagram, Jenny settled down thinking nothing would come out of it.

As you might expect, Jenny was seriously wrong. Once the beautician removed the long bamboo instrument, there was a visible brown clump of wax attached to it.

You need to clean your ears better, the beautician reportedly told Jennys friend.

They typically use seven different tools with little explanation, with one seemingly having a fan-like end. Another clip showed the beautician using a tuning fork.

People were shocked by the display, while some admitted to having enjoyed it themselves on their travels.

I think about the ear cleaning I got in China every day, one person said.

Another wrote: I did this in Xian China and I swear I thought I was going to lose my hearing.

Should you put anything in your ear?

The use of Q-tips has been a highly debated subject for literally decades, with some arguing it’s very dangerous and others loving the feeling.

It is advised to avoid placing any items inside the ears, such as cotton swabs, since this can cause damage to the canal or even rupture the thin and delicate tympanic membrane, which can lead to hearing loss, Dr. Joaquin Villegas, a family medicine physician at UTHealth Houston, told NBC News.  Cotton swabs can still be used for the cleaning of the outer ear but should not be inserted into the inner ear.

Earwax, known medically as cerumen, is also a necessary part of our bodies despite its sticky nature. It protects your ear from bacterial invasions, has antimicrobial properties to prevent infection, and helps to prevent irritation.
