Ruth’s role in Russian Doll

Ruth Brenner is one of the central characters we are introduced to in Russian Doll. As the adoptive mother of lead character Nadia Vulvokov (Natasha Lyonne), Ruth plays a key part in understanding Nadia’s back story as it unfolds. She works as a psychologist and the first season introduces Ruth’s friendship with Nadia’s mother, Lenora (Chlöe Sevigny).

The actress portraying Ruth in Russian Doll is Elizabeth Ashley. However, the first season also introduced viewers to a younger version of the character. Young Ruth in season 1 was played by Kate Jennings Grant, starring in episode 7 (The Way Out).

As the second season of Russian Doll continues down a mind, and time-bending, path we are introduced to another actress taking on the role of Ruth.

Who plays young Ruth in season 2?

The actress taking on the role of young Ruth in Russian Doll season 2 is Annie Murphy. Schitt’s Creek fans will recognise Murphy from the sitcom as she starred in the lead role of Alexis Rose. Murphy makes her first appearance in Russian Doll season 2 in episode 2.

Russian Doll creator and star Natasha Lyonne gushed over Annie Murphy to E! News: “Annie has a real heart to her. It’s very easy to love Annie. Obviously that has to do with who she is as a human being.

“Who wouldn’t want to be with Annie Murphy? In the meantime, she looks like Jane Fonda or something in the Seventies. She looks great, she looks straight out of a (Martin) Scorsese movie. She was just terrific.”
