Yinka Bokinni’s age, boyfriend and parents revealed: Broadcast and radio journalist Yinka Bokinni developed the Channel 4 documentary, The Boy Next Door, to mark the 20-year anniversary of the murder of Damilola Taylor outside a North Peckham estate. Now, viewers want to know more about Bokinni and her connection to Damilola when they were both kids.

Who is Yinka Bokinni?

Yinka Bokinni was born in England to an Irish mother and a Nigerian father, one of six siblings in very close-knit family. As a child, she grew up on the same North Peckham estate as Damilola Taylor, and the two were part of the same friend group.

She said in an interview with Melanmag: “My dad is my biggest fan.”

She also revealed how she grew up in a West African household: “My mum was very receptive to Nigerian culture.” During a Tedx Talk she spoke about the myth of escaping the ghetto (see below).

Bokinni has a degree in law, but decided to follow a career in broadcast journalism instead, to incorporate her love for music into her work. She started at RinseFM as a volunteer and moved on to The Breakfast Show in 2015.

After feeling like her career was stagnating, she sent a tape to Capital XTRA in 2016. They took her on as a presenter and she has been working there since.

Additionally, Yinka works as a DJ, vlogger and blogger and has appeared in magazines such as Hello and Fabulous. She also publishes short YouTube videos about true crime.

Yinka Bokkini’s age and boyfriend revealed

Yinka is 31 years old. She was born on 16 February 1989, which makes her an Aquarius.

In 2018, she appeared in a video by Dazed media, where she was set up with a Tinder date with a man named Sheik. In the three-minute video, Yinka’s fierce, take-no-prisoners attitude shines through charmingly. She and Sheik end up going ten-pin bowling, but there’s no indication that they continued dating after this video.

A month after this video, however, in an interview with Metro, Yinka talked about her morning routine: “I check to make sure I haven’t overslept and then kiss the boyfriend on the cheek because… morning breath.”

It is unknown if Sheik became her boyfriend or if she was seeing someone else at the time. However, according to DatingCelebs she is currently single. She talks about her previous boyfriend in this video below:

How is Yinka connected to Damilola Taylor?

Yinka developed the Channel 4 documentary about Damilola’s murder, which was produced by Ashley Francis-Roy, to commemorate the death of her childhood friend.

The synopsis on Channel 4 states: “Yinka Bokinni was a friend of Damilola Taylor growing up in Peckham. On the 20th anniversary of his death, she confronts the impact of his killing and conflicting thoughts of their childhood community.”

Yinka grew up on the same estate as Damilola Taylor and in the clip below tells Good Morning Britain she knew him for four months before his passing.

A few months after the murder, the North Peckham estate was pulled down and its residents re-homed.

In an interview with The Guardian, Yinka talks about being unable to mourn his death with her peers: “Us kids never saw each other again. For 20 years, we never even talked about Damilola.”

Yinka’s vulnerability and resilience have captured the nation through the way she talks about her childhood friend and the person he could have been today.
