Snowpiercer's Winter Song: Who wrote janitor Oz's song?

Snowpiercer’s season 2 finale (part 1) features the beautiful Winter Song, sung by janitor John “Oz” Osweiller (Sam Otto). Who wrote Winter Song originally, and what do we know about Sam Otto’s singing career? Listen below!

Winter Song is part of a broad and eclectic soundtrack

Post-apocalyptic dystopian thriller series Snowpiercer, based on Bong Joon-ho’s 2013 film (same name) and the 1982 French graphic novel Le Transperceneige, features a soundtrack designed by composers Bear McCreary and Bobby Krlic.

Viewers may have recognised the voice of Etta James on season 2 episode 10, or Lena Hall, as played through Wilford’s record player, in episode 5.

Zero 7 and Iron Mic Family are also among those whose songs have graced the series’ soundtrack.

However, it is Oz’s rendition of Winter Song that has got fans curious.

Who wrote Snowpiercer’s Winter Song?

During dinner with Wilford, in the first half of the season 2 finale, janitor Oz plays Winter Song on the piano. It begins with the line, “This is my winter song to you”.

Written by Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson, Winter Song is a seasonal song originally written and sung as a duet.

The song peaked at number 97 in the Canadian charts in 2008, and at number two in Ireland in 2011.

However, it got a new lease of life when the Twitterers and the Twitterettes of the Parish of Twitter re-recorded it. Its release as a charity single in December of 2011 became known as the TWinter Song.

It re-entered the Irish Singles Chart at number eight. Its reappearance caused Bareilles and Michaelson’s original to rise to number two in the same week.

Is actor Sam Otto also a singer?

Sam Otto’s rendition of the song as janitor Oz moved audiences when it aired two days ago. But does he have a professional singing career? Surprisingly not.

After training at Drama Centre London, the 28-year-old British actor gained popularity in 2017 portraying Jalal in Peter Kosminsky’s The State (Channel 4).

Perhaps audiences will hear more of Otto’s vocals in the future. Listen to him singing These Old Shoes with Lucy Ireland and Aidan Harkins, for the Barn Theatre, below.
