The Eternals is now streaming on Disney+, so fans are rushing to watch – or rewatch – the franchise’s newest film featuring an ensemble cast. Like every Marvel movie, fans take to forums to discuss their opinions, and the latest question is: why did Ikaris kill Ajak?
Marvel’s Phase 4 started off extremely strong in 2021 with Black Widow kicking things off in July, and Spider-Man: No Way Home smashing records in December.
All four releases, including Shang Chi and The Eternals, landed in the top 6 highest grossing films of 2021.
Best of all, three of them are now available to stream on Disney+ after The Eternals landed on 12 January.
Directed by Chloe Zhao, the film stars Gemma Chan (Sersi), Richard Madden (Ikaris), Salma Hayek (Ajak), Angelina Jolie (Thena), and Don Lee (Gilgamesh) amongst others.

Why did Ikaris kill Ajak?
After Ajak, the Prime Eternal, Ikaris is regarded as the leader and the strongest Eternal. His life purpose is to help initiate Earth’s Emergence for the birth of the Celestial Tiamut The Communicator, as intended by Arishem.
This explains why Ikaris kills Ajak: she reveals to him that she is against Arishem’s plan, so he betrays and kills her by feeding her the Deviants to prevent her from stopping the Emergence. Her body gets planted back at the house for the others to believe that a Deviant was responsible.
He initially recruits the other Eternals to prepare for the Emergence, until Sersi realises the consequences of it: Earth’s destruction.
Along with the other Eternals, she insists on battling against him, despite their love.
Jealous of Ikaris and Sersi’s relationship and feeling disadvantaged due to her 12-year-old body, Sprite (Lia McHugh) sides with Ikaris and fights alongside him at the scene of the Emergence, the foot of an active volcano in the Indian Ocean.
New fans vs old fans review the film
Dedicated Marvel fans who watched it theatres are still loving The Eternals after their second watching, with one fan ranking it as one of their top 5.
But new viewers have been giving it mixed responses, with many praising the cinematics and the aesthetics of the movie, but ultimately left feeling underwhelmed by the plot and cast chemistry.
We have to say that it’s pretty obvious that a sequel will be coming, so scene setting is necessary, particularly since there are so many heroes.
Some Harry Styles fans were particularly pumped to see him appear in the mid-credits scene as Eros, Thanos’ brother. And no, he isn’t purple.

We do agree with this fan though: where were The Eternals when we needed them the most? We blame them for the death of Iron Man.
