Young Wallander’s scenic filming locations
The majority of season 2 will be filmed in the same areas as season 1 in Lithuania’s capital, Vilnius. The production designer Malin Lindholm decided that Lithuania would act as southern Sweden, where the series is set.
In the show, Kurt lives in Malmö, Sweden, and The Rosengård housing development is largely used as a base location. The estate was built as part of the Swedish ‘Million Homes’ programme between the 1960s and 1970s. The series has certainly heightened the violence and tensions around immigration in Malmö. Whilst keeping the series relatable with the current social issues in Sweden.
Vilnius has a lot of cinematic potential with a diverse range of locations and scenery. If you think that some of the locations look familiar, it’s because it has been the home of other productions; Stranger Things, War & Peace, Tokyo Trial, Chernobyl, and The Last Czars.
Šeškinė is another filming location that has been used and it was likely picked due to the unique buildings and variety of shooting opportunities. Šeškinė is also surrounded by hills and with very traditional buildings and streets, making for some interesting shooting perspectives. The area is also home to one of the flats that serves as Kurt’s apartment in the series.
Young Wallander’s previous filming locations
Wallander which is the original television series was also filmed in Europe. Most of its shooting locations are in Skåne, Sweden, and Copenhagen, Denmark.
However, Vilnius became the prime location for season 2 and Jūratė Pazikaitė, the director of the Vilnius Film Office, explains that it was not always easy; “Shooting in such a densely populated neighbourhood is rather difficult — it requires a lot of understanding, goodwill and patience both from the residents and the filming crew,”
Thankfully, the natives got on board and the production was able to successfully cast hundreds of the locals as extras for the show. Fans can’t wait to carry on watching the series and discover new holiday locations as Vilnius will now attract more tourists.
