Jason DeRusha announced he was leaving his WCCO role in May

WCCO’s Jason DeRusha revealed he would be leaving his current position during a broadcast last month (24 May).

DeRusha explained that he would be “taking a leap” as he revealed he was transitioning into a new role and “new adventure”, but at the time, he did not go into detail about his next steps.

Addressing WCCO viewers, he said: “After more than two decades at WCCO and nine years on this morning show, I’ve made the decision to take a leap and try and new adventure.”

Despite him moving on to new things, he added he would still be staying on as a contributor and would feature on-screen again for station events and special projects.

Anchor said his goodbyes to WCCO This Morning today

Today (23 June) marked Jason DeRusha’s final day as part of the WCCO This Morning.

DeRusha signed off from his on-screen WCCO This Morning anchoring duties today as he reflected on his almost two decades at the station.

Looking back on his tenure, he gushed: “We’ve spent almost 2700 mornings together. I’ve been here in this building, in this room for 19 years.”

Ahead of his last day on-air, DeRusha took to Twitter as he admitted that while he would miss anchoring, he will miss the people more as he reflected on his friendships with some of the behind the scene WCCO staffers:

Where is Jason DeRusha going next?

Jason DeRusha may be stepping down from his onscreen role at the Minneapolis TV station, but he’s not leaving WCCO fully.

Instead of anchoring, he will be hosting his own afternoon drivetime radio show on WCCO radio. DeRusha may already be familiar to some listeners as he is a frequent fill-in host of the radio station.

The morning anchor announced the news on-air earlier this month. Talking of his new role at the time he explained: “I’ll be on from three till six doing a lot of what I’ve done with you for two decades, just doing it a little later in the day.”

DeRusha’s been a part of WCCO for almost two decades

Jason DeRusha first joined the Minneapolis station in 2003 and celebrated 19 years at WCCO in April.

A decade later, he joined the WCCO This Morning team as co-anchor for the morning broadcasts. Before then, he had been a reporter for the franchise segment Good Question as well as anchoring on the weekend.

During his career, he’s been nominated for more than 20 Regional Emmy Awards having won his 10th last year for outstanding achievement in talent, News Anchor.

Prior to WCCO, DeRusha worked for other local TV stations, including Milwaukee’s WISN, NBC affiliate’s KWQC and WREX.
