Netflix’s The Sandman is a big hit with fans

Based on a cult-classic comic book series, Netflix released The Sandman on August 5, 2022. Fans have taken to social media to share their love for the series, calling out for a second season after only a few days.

The original comic ran from 1988 to 1996, with 75 issues and one special. It was written by Neil Gaiman and sees Dream face the consequences of his decisions as well as learning deeper empathy while travelling all through the various worlds of classical mythology and world history.

Dream is a living avatar of creative imagination and brings about new things. He is one of the seven siblings, called The Endless, born of a fling between Night and Time. They are Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair and Delirium.

The series features a cast full of seasoned actors alongside exciting newcomers. Alongside Tom Sturridge we have Harry Potter actor David Thewlis, Game Of Thrones’ Gwendoline Christie, and legendary voice actor Patton Oswalt.

What is the Annulet in The Sandman?

Traditionally an annulet is a small ring or an encircling band on the shaft of a column.

In The Sandman comics, the Annulet is also known as the Dream Vortex or simply the Vortex. It’s a mysterious phenomenon and no one quite knows why it happens. The Annulet is a mortal who happens to be the centre of The Dreaming, which is the world where people go to dream.

The Vortex or Annulet feels and see the dreams of the people around them and they can bring together dreams of multiple people. This starts with just a few people but, after a while, the Annulet can bring together the dreams of entire cities. This is incredibly dangerous and can collapse the whole of The Dreaming! Dream must hunt down this human to stop this.

In the Netflix series, the term ‘vortex’ is used much more frequently than ‘annulet’.

Who is the Vortex/Annulet in The Sandman?

In The Sandman, Dream was warned by Lucienne that the Vortex risked breaking the boundary between The Dreaming and the waking world.

The character of Rose Walker is the Vortex. She’s a young girl looking for her brother Jed after they were separated and put into care.

Rose soon discovers she is the granddaughter of a woman called Unite Kincaid, who was one of the children who had been asleep for decades, unable to wake. She has all the powers of a Vortex, even getting her friend Lyta pregnant after she simply dreamed of being pregnant.

Dream pursues her with the intent to kill her, despite feeling intense guilt at the thought of it. However, it’s revealed Unite was supposed to be the original Vortex and asks her granddaughter to hand over her powers so she can die and Rose can live a normal life.

Work on The Sandman season 2 script has begun

At the time of writing, Netflix has yet to renew Sandman for season 2. However, the series has only been out for a short period of time so we expect to hear from Netflix about a possible renewal in the next few months.

Fans have been calling out for a second season on social media as they feel the storyline has a long way to go. Could this be the next Game Of Thrones?

Executive producer David S Goyer told Esquire he is already working on the script for season 2 should the project be green-lit for another series.

He said they have enough material for multiple seasons thanks to the comics and hopes they get the chance to show fans the true arc of The Sandman storyline.
