Did you fall in love with Henry Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia in The Witcher series? Are you looking to delve deeper into the lore? Then look no further than Netflix’s new prequel origin movie Witcher: Nightmare Of The Wolf. We take a closer look at the new film and explain meaning of The Witcher term Mahr.

Slight spoilers ahead!

What is Witcher: Nightmare Of The Wolf?

This new Witcher animated movie follows the origins of Geralt Of Rivia’s mentor Vesemir. We watch as he grows from a young boy who dreams of becoming a Witcher, to a full blown monster hunter.

However, Vesemir begins the movie as a coin-seeking sellout who prizes money and riches over everything else.

The story also explores his romance with Lady Zerbst, or Illyana, as well as his antagonist, The Witcher-hating Tetra Gilcrest.

The pivotal tension of this movie is a battle for Kaer Morhen, The Witcher stronghold where new Witchers are created.

Meaning of Mahr explained

The term Mahr from The Witcher universe is a name for a monster. This creature possesses humans, creates illusions, and needs to be exorcised by a Witcher.

In Nightmare Of The Wolf a young woman name Illyana works for a noble lady who has descended into madness.

Deglan, a Witcher, suspects that she has in fact become possessed by an evil Mahr and that he must purge her of this monster.

There is also another appearance of a Mahr in the film. However, this time we meet a hybrid Kitsu-Mahr monster. It can throw up powerful illusions and threatens Vesemir and Tetra Gilcrest.
