Squid Game explores a dystopian reality in which a mysterious organisation recruits people who are in staggering amounts of debt to compete in a series of games for the chance of winning tremendous sums of money (45.6 billion won, to be precise).

The games are based on classic children’s games, some of which are specific to Korea, while others, such as Red Light, Green Light, are known worldwide.

However, unlike typical children’s games, those in Squid Game have deadly consequences should you lose.

And let me tell you, it’s very gory.

Since its debut, viewers have been taking to social media to share their excitement for the series.

Ojingeo Geim is a game of offence and defence using a squid-shaped board drawn in the dirt.

Encyclopedia of Korean Folk Culture states Ojingeo Geim is named after the shape of its board, which looks like a squid, with characteristic circles, triangles and squares.

The number of players varies from eight to ten in most cases, and up to 20 if there are enough players to participate on a bigger board.

Will there be a season 2?

As more viewers tune in on Netflix, curiosity around whether there’ll be a Squid Game season 2 grows.

At the time of writing, the Korean series has yet to be renewed for season 2 by either Netflix or Siren Pictures Inc, the production company behind the hit K-drama.

However, fans can be confident they’ll see another round of the deadly competition at some point in the future given the show’s immediate success.
