Meaning behind Freydis’ sword in Vikings: Valhalla

The massive fight scene between Freydis and Kåre features a special sword. Freydis was given the sword by the priests of Uppsala during her visit. You will also see her use Bjorn Ragnar’s sword in the series. On the special sword, the words engraved say: “Keeper of the Faith.”

Many viewers are keen to know the sword’s origin. You’ll be interested to know that it is purely fiction and was created as a prop specifically for Vikings: Valhalla.

In the fight, Kåre disarms her of the sword which leads Freydis to make a fierce comeback; stabbing him with a dagger. She then grabs her sword and decides that words will cut deeper, as Freydis remarks: “The cross that carries the sword was never you,” she tells him. “It was my destiny.” Kåre then gasps “no” before Freydis kills him once and for all.

Who is Freydis Eriksdotter?

Freydis Eriksdotter is the sister of Norse explorer Leif Erikson (Sam Corlett). This means that Freydis is a capable warrior and will stop at nothing to get her way. During the spin-off, she seeks revenge on a Christian Viking who had raped and injured her years before.  During a dinner party held in Jarl Haakan’s quarters, Freydis kills the Viking, she has to deals with the ramifications of this act but eventually receives respect as a convincing warrior.

As told in the Saga of the Greenlanders, it is supposed that Freydis had quite the legacy and murdered five women. In the Saga of Erik the Red, Freydis (who was pregnant at the time) uses the sword of a dead Viking to pound against her chest in a stance of fearlessness and victory.
