While promoting his new show Assembly Required with Richard Karn, Tim Allen shared details about being arrested in his 20s. We take a closer look at the real story behind Tim Allen’s mug shot.

Why does Tim Allen have a mug shot?

It is hard to believe that the voice actor behind Toy Story’s beloved Buzz Lightyear, Tim Allen, has a mug shot story.

However, the actor was arrested with more than half a kilo of drugs in his possession – 650 grams of cocaine, to be exact – at the Kalamazoo/ Battle Creek International Airport, in 1978.

Allen spent two years and four months in a federal prison on the charge of drug trafficking and managed to get a reduced sentence by naming some of the other members involved.

However, he recently revealed that he and another young man took the punishment for a group of over 20 men.

Allen has said about serving time in jail: “It was a watershed moment. It put me in a position of great humility, and I was able to make amends to friends and family and refocus my life on setting and achieving goals.”

Tim Allen’s mug shot from that time has been circulating around social media:

Tim’s early life: ‘I was an eff up’

Tim Allen has recently called his 20 year old self an “eff up”. He elaborated: “After my old man died, I really just played games with people and told adults what they wanted to hear and then stole their booze.”

Allen’s father, Gerald Dick, was killed by a drunk driver when Tim was only 11 years old.

The Home Improvement star has had his own battles with alcohol. He started drinking at only 10 years old after watching cowboys drink in Westerns. He has been in and out of rehab a few times, but he is now nearly 23 years sober.
