Survival drama Squid Game was added to Netflix last Friday (17 September), with many having since taken to the streaming platform to watch the new release. Others have since reacted to the Squid Game series on social media following character Kang Sae-Byeok’s shocking death.
Kang Sae-Byeok’s Squid Game death explained
Kang Sae-Byeok was one of the many participants that took part in the mysterious survival competition known as The Squid Game.
In the series, the audience learn before Sae-Byeok entered the game, she is was a pickpocket trying to raise funds to bring her parents from North to South Korea and take care of her brother, who was living in an orphanage.
After being scammed out of her savings, she later takes a chance in competing within the games, which offered an obscene amount of prize money for the winner. Within the survival game, Sae-Byeok is seen to make it just before the final round where she dies at the hands of Cho Sang-Woo.
At the time Seong Gi-Hun who grew close with Sae-Byeok throughout the competition later enters the room as he sees Sang-Woo standing by Sae-Byeok’s lifeless body.
He runs over to Sae-Byeok as he cries her name in disbelief. Gi-Hun goes on to swing for Sang-Woo, but the guards stop him and pin him to the ground as he watches Sae-Byeok’s body being taken away.

The game begins with 456 contestants, with Kang Sae-Byeok, one of many characters to have died as part of the survival competition.
Other notable character’s who were lost throughout the series include elder contestant Oh Il Nam and Ji Yeong who chose to sacrifice herself so Sae-Byeok could survive in one of the games after they befriended each other.

Who is the actress behind Squid Game’s Kang Sae Byeok?
She made her on-screen debut in 2013 as she competed on reality series Korea’s Next Top Model, where she reached the top three. Having grazed the covers of well-known fashion editorials, Ho-Yeon has also walked runways for Burberry, Chanel and Vera Wang.
Ho-Yeon’s role in Squid Game as Kang Sae Byeok is her first acting role. Since its release, AllKpop reported her following on Instagram to have grown from 400,000 to 1.6 million. At the time of this article’s publication, her following has doubled and is now 2.7 million.
