If you’re impatiently bingeing your way through Addams Family spin-off Wednesday, you might be wanting to know if Xavier is behind the mystery monster.
WARNING: Spoilers from Wednesday season 1 ahead
Halloween might well and truly be over, but Tim Burton’s always one for mixing up holidays. The Nightmare Before Christmas creator is back with another spooky treat as Wednesday premieres on Netflix, just shy of a month from Christmas.
While most viewers will be familiar with The Addams Family from the 1991 comedy classic of the same name, Wednesday hones in on the deadpan daughter, whose name gives the show its title. Following Wednesday through her teen years at Nevermore Academy, the mystery of who the Hyde monster is dominates the first season.
Wednesday suspects Xavier could be the monster
While collecting evidence about the Hyde monster, Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) discovers uncovers psychic artist Xavier (Percy Hynes White) has been painting pictures of the moon-eyed creature.
This leads Wednesday to the suspicion that Xavier knows more about the monster than he’s let on – even that he could be the monster.
“How do you know what the monster looks like?” Wednesday asks Xavier.
In his defense, Xavier says: “This creature’s been haunting my dreams for the past couple weeks. I try to block it out but I can’t. So I just come in here and paint it. When I was painting this one, the claws reached out the canvas and took a swipe at me. That’s how I got these scratches.”
Is Xavier the monster in Netflix’s Wednesday?
No, Xavier is not the Hyde monster. When he tells Wednesday “I told you I’m not the monster,” he wasn’t lying. But that didn’t stop Wednesday in her conviction.
As a result, Wednesday’s “evidence” gets Xavier arrested for the murder of six “normies” in the woodland outside the school grounds.
Because of this case of mistaken identity, the real Hyde monster continues to plague the town.
The Hyde monster is finally revealed
One of the main mysteries in Wednesday season 1 surrounds who the Hyde monster really is. A Hyde is a volatile outcast form which can tune into its dark side and transform on command, once the power has been unlocked.
It turns out that the Hyde was actually Tyler (Hunter Doohan), the Sheriff’s son. Considering that the Sheriff has been Wednesday’s right-hand man in the hunt for the Hyde, and someone she had a romantic connection with, this is an awkward twist reveal for Wednesday.
The deadpan Addams daughter discovers that Tyler is the monster after she kisses him. The telepathic powers Wednesday acquired reveal the truth about Tyler in a vision.
A look at the other creatures in Netflix’s Wednesday
As Wednesday Addams transfers to Nevermore Academy, she comes in contact with a whole cast of supernatural characters. It’s not only the Hyde monster who has spooky powers of transformation, as there are werewolves, vampires, and many more creatures that go ‘bump in the night’.
Here’s a rundown of some of the characters and their powers to keep an eye out for:
- Enid Sinclair (Emma Myers) – werewolf
- Bianca Barclay (Joy Sunday) – siren
- Ajax (Georgie Farmer) – gorgon
