The Rick and Morty season 5 two-part finale aired yesterday, and already the explainers have hit the small screens – but who is British sketch comedian Siobhan Thompson, who wrote the first part, and what else has she worked on?

Who is Rick and Morty writer Siobhan Thompson?

Acclaimed Back To The Future parody-turned-Adult Swim behemoth Rick and Morty is not Siobhan Thompson’s first foray into American comedy.

Born 1984, Thompson is a British sketch comedian and comedy writer. But her most famous work, and longest running collaboration, has been with CollegeHumor Originals.

Thompson worked as a writer on 14 episodes, from 2015 to 2019. She also acted, predominantly as herself but also as “Hands”, “Jess”, “Jenny Ynnej” and “Black Widow”, in 159 episodes, from 2013 to 2019.

CollegeHumor, once “at the heart” of a “goofy, bygone Internet”, collapsed in 2020 after its parent company IAC/InterActive Corp sold it off.

Where else have you seen, or heard, her?

Siobhan Thompson moved from England – she trained at the University of Bristol – to New York City over a decade ago, initially to be an archaeologist. But she quickly found comedy, and put her Englishness to work.

Having grown up outside Bath, in the bucolic southwest – “so yeah, Jane Austen, a lot of that stuff” – Thompson was well placed to host BBC America web series Anglophenia.

She took classes at the Upright Citizens Brigade in 2010, and spent time with The Second City in Chicago. In 2016, she appeared in Bad Internet, alongside fellow CH alum Grant O’Brien. Then, in 2020, she joined Rick and Morty as a writer.

How have fans reacted to Thompson’s Rick and Morty episode?

Siobhan Thompson wrote the first part of the season 5 two-part finale of Rick and Morty – Forgetting Sarick Mortshall – and tweeted the fact about 10 hours ago. Kyounghee Lim directed.

It is the series’ 50th episode. Siobhan is credited as a staff writer on a total of 10 episodes so far, the latest (besides episode 50) being Rickternal Friendship of the Spotless Mort.

The episode has earned praise since it aired last night. But her introduction as a writer is apparently of greater significance than just one episode.

However, as one astute observer tweeted, “If I know anything about Rick & Morty fans it’s that they’re nice”. Nevertheless, the episode went down well, and many are looking forward to what season 6 brings.
