It has been announced that Elizabeth Debicki will play the coveted role of Princess Diana in the upcoming season of The Crown on Netflix.
She will join Imelda Staunton as Queen Elizabeth and Jonathan Pryce as Prince Philip in Season 5 of the popular drama about the British Royal Family. The series has gripped viewers with its strikingly intimate portrayal of the highs and lows of living as part of the most famous family in Britain.
The Crown’s Twitter account quoted Debicki explaining what the role means to her.
Who Is Elizabeth Debicki?
Elizabeth Debicki is a 29-year-old Australian actress best known for her breakout role in Baz Luhrmann’s hedonistic film adaption of The Great Gatsby. She was born in France but grew up in Melbourne, Australia.
Debicki stands at an impressive 6ft 3 and has a striking presence on screen. Her roles have been diverse and unexpected as she continues to pick challenging, complex characters.
The Elizabeth Debicki roles you must see
The Great Gatsby
Debicki played the glamorous and androgynous Jordan Baker in Baz Luhrmann’s adaption of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. Her character epitomised the natural excess of the twenties. This was the role that got her on Hollywood’s radar and made audiences sit up and take note.
Vita and Virginia
This was a vastly different part for Debicki, portraying the fiercely intelligent figure of Virginia Woolf. She has experience playing real people with sensitivity and clarity. Her depiction of Woolf was both charming and tragically raw, showing the complexity of what it means to desperately love another woman and the spiralling effects of an intense mental health condition.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2
Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the most loved franchises within the Marvel universe. Debicki joined for the high-octane sequel as the golden-clad leader of the Sovereign. She was an imposing and serious villain set against the chaotic hilarity of the original Guardians team. Watch out for her return in the third instalment of the franchise.
The Night Manager
The role of Jed Marshall is perhaps Debicki’s most critically acclaimed work. Her chemistry with Tom Hiddleston leapt off the screen. Beyond that, her depiction of a woman dealing with both emotional abuse and physical domestic violence was some of the most compelling and heartbreaking acting of the whole series. Le Carré himself said to Debicki about her character, ‘Oh, you made her so much more interesting than I did.’ This is not a role that you can afford to miss.
The Man From U.N.C.L.E
Playing the villain Victoria in this Guy Ritchie spy thriller showed just how stylish and elegant Debicki really is. Her style complimented her murderous intent to create a woman who could outwit and outsmart the best of us.
Debicki’s new role in Christopher Nolan’s hotly anticipated action movie has been kept tightly under wraps. The film promises us time-bending madness and high-octane fight scenes. What we do know is that it will not be one to miss.
Playing Princess Diana is going to be a turning point in Elizabeth Debicki’s career. Taking on the task of representing one of the most beloved figures in recent British history is not going to be easy, but Debicki’s past roles show that she is up to the challenge.
