Never Have I Ever returned for its second season on Netflix on 15 July and well-known actor and singer Common has joined the cast as Dr Chris Jackson.

Created by Mindy Kaling and Lang Fisher, the teen comedy series stars Maitreyi Ramakrishnan as Indian-American teenager Devi, who struggles with her love life and identity after the death of her father.

Season 2 picks up from the events of the first season’s finale, giving fans much-needed answers about Devi’s dating life.

One of the new additions to the season 2 cast of Never Have I Ever is rapper Common, whose character (spoiler!) will go on to have a significant role in the life of Devi’s mother, Nalini.

Who is Common in Never Have I Ever?

Common, whose real name is Lonnie Rashid Lynn, has been cast as dermatologist Dr Chris Jackson in season 2 of the Netflix show.

Dr Jackson is introduced in the first episode when Devi’s mother Nalini (Poorna Jagannathan) wants to sell her client roster to him before moving to India. He works in the same building as Nalini and his medical clinic looks like a spa centre.

While the two have a rocky rapport in the beginning, Nalini and Dr Jackson soon start to develop romantic feelings for one another.

Season 2: Dr Chris Jackson and Nalini’s relationship explored

Dr Jackson enters Nalini’s life at a critical time, just as she has an important decision to make about her life with Devi.

Similar to her daughter Devi, Nalini struggles to fit in with the Los Angeles scene after the death of her husband and decides to move to India to be with her family.

Speaking to EW, showrunner Lang Fisher explained how Dr Jackson fits into Nalini’s and Devi’s world after the death of Mohan.

Fisher told the publication: “Season 1 was about saying goodbye. Both Nalini and Devi had pushed it off and not dealt with their feelings about Mohan dying. And this season, it’s about moving on. It’s about life without him and how to bounce back.”

Speaking about Dr Jackson, Fisher continued: “He is a little flashier. He’s a real LA dermatologist, with his own product line. He does a lot of cosmetic work and his office looks like a spa, whereas Nalini thinks that’s undignified for a medical office.

“Mohan is probably the only person she’s ever been with. They got together very young, and I don’t think she’s ever [experienced] adult dating. It does catch her by surprise.”
