The BBC has announced Ncuti Gatwa will be the new Doctor Who in Russell T Davies’ long-running hit TV show. The actor will replace Jodie Whittaker as the Time Lord. As we hear of Ncuti Gatwa’s success, fans want to know more about him, including his age. Read on to find out who he is.

Ncuti Gatwa will take over from Jodie Whittaker as the Time Lord and the new Doctor Who, it has been announced by the BBC.

The broadcaster posted a tweet with a caption “the future is here!” alongside a headshot of Ncuti Gatwa.

The star, who is best known for his role in Sex Education, will be the first black actor to play the Time Lord and will replace Jodie who became the first woman Doctor.

Fans were ecstatic over the news, with one writing: “I can’t freaking believe it! Eric from Sex Education is the Doctor!”

Another added: “Called it. Fourteenth Doctor was gonna be an actor who is not very well known. Looking forward to seeing what he brings to the table!”

Ncuti Gatwa played Eric Effiong in Sex Education. He won the Best Actor Award at the Scottish BAFTAs in 2020.

He is set to be the first black actor to take the continuing role of the Time Lord. It will come after actress Jo Martin appeared in the 13th series as an alternative version of Doctor Who in an episode with Whittaker.

The star is still at the beginning of his career progression, after playing Eric Effiong in Sex Education.

The comedy series follows socially awkward high-school students as they face personal dilemmas, often related to intimacy. The show received critical acclaim after it was released in 2019. More than 40 million viewers streamed the first season after its debut. A second series was released in 2020 and a third followed in September 2021. The fourth Sex Education series was announced last year.

Ncuti Gatwa is 29 years old and is over the moon after landing his new role.

Ncuti said: “There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling.

“A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and, of course, a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself, and each one of my incredibly talented predecessors has handled that unique responsibility and privilege with the utmost care.

“I will endeavour my upmost to do the same.”

It’s a ‘dream come true’

He continued: “Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself and being able to work with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, incredibly intelligent and fizzing with danger. An actor’s metaphorical playground.

“The entire team have been so welcoming and truly give their hearts to the show. And, so as much as it’s daunting, I’m aware I’m joining a really supportive family. Unlike the Doctor, I may only have one heart but I am giving it all to this show.”

He also shared the news with his 2.6 million Instagram followers on Sunday, 8 May.

He shared a picture of two red hearts above a plus sign and a blue square. Davis wrote beneath the photo: “The future is here.”

Who is Ncuti Gatwa and where is he from?

Ncuti Gatwa was born in Rwanda and raised in Scotland. He began acting in 2014 and two years later played Demetrius in a production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Shakespeare’s Globe.

He was cast in Netflix’s Sex Education in 2018.

Davies spoke about the confirmation of the new role, reports The Sun. He said: “The future is here – and it’s Ncuti!

“Sometimes talent walks through the door and it’s so bright and bold and brilliant, I just stand back in awe and thank my lucky stars. Ncuti dazzled us, seized hold of the Doctor and owned those TARDIS keys in seconds.

“It’s an honour to work with him, and a hoot. I can’t wait to get started.

“I’m sure you’re dying to know more, but we’re rationing ourselves for now, with the wonderful Jodie’s epic finale yet to come. But I promise you, 2023 will be spectacular!”
