Will there be a Mixed-ish season 2? The ABC show first aired in September 2019 and has built a solid following since. Now, fans are worried Mixed-ish might have been cancelled after a period of no updates on a second season. Of course, that might just be down to the pandemic.
What plans lie ahead for the Black-ish prequel? Let’s take a closer look.
Will there be a Mixed-ish season 2?
Good news fans, Mixed-ish season 2 has been confirmed by ABC! The network renewed the show for another season in May 2020.
So far, though, no clear release date has been announced for the show’s highly anticipated second season.
Season 1 of the show did quite well on ABC, with ratings suggesting it had three million viewers and an average rating of 0.65 in the 18 to 49 age demographic.
However, audiences seem to like it less than its sister show, Black-ish, which sparked fears Mixed-ish would be cancelled after its first season.
Speaking of Black-ish, it has also been renewed and is going into its seventh season.
What is Mixed-ish about?
Mixed-ish is the prequel to Black-ish and follows the childhood years of Rainbow ‘Bow’ Johnston (Arica Himmel) and her experience growing up in a mixed-race family in the 1980s.
The family struggles with the dilemma of whether to blend into American society or stay true to their roots after moving from a hippie commune to the suburbs in 1985.
The experiences in the show are loosely based on co-creator Kenya Barris’s wife, Dr Rania Barris, and her upbringing in a similar situation.
Mixed-ish stars Arica Himmel as 12-year-old Rainbow ‘Bow’ Johnston. Born in 2005, this is Himmel’s first recurring role on a TV show.
The show is narrated by Tracee Ellis Ross in the role of adult Rainbow, who gives the audience insight into Rainbow’s thoughts and experiences in every episode. Ellis Ross plays adult Rainbow in Black-Ish.
Other characters include Tika Sumpter as Alicia Johnston, Rainbow’s mum who works as a lawyer, and Mark-Paul Gosselaar as Paul Johnston, Rainbow’s father.
There are still more details to be announced for the second season of Mixed-Ish, so keep your eyes peeled on social media for further updates.
