Emilie Brzezinski died aged 90 last month

News of the Morning Joe co-host’s mother’s passing was announced via The Washington Post on Friday, July 22.

In the publication’s obituary, it reported Emilie Brzezinski, who suffered from Parkinson’s disease, had died at her home in Jupiter, Florida.

Emilie, was married to the late Zbigniew Brzezinski, who served as national security adviser for 39th US president Jimmy Carter. While she became acquainted with politicians and diplomats through her husband, Emilie’s true passion was art.

She began creating art in the 1970s, experimenting with a variety of media before finding her chosen medium focusing on felled trees. Her work has been exhibited around the world in gallery and museum installations in the US as well as internationally.

For many years Emilie created her sculptures in her studio in McLean, Virginia. She also lived in McLean until a few years ago. The McLean Project Of The Arts honoured the sculptor last year.

Mika Brzezinski pays tribute to mother in moving post

Mika Brzezinski had confirmed the news of her mother’s passing via a two-part post on her Instagram.

Brzezinski began: “This is hard to write or even comprehend. Along with my brothers, Ian and Mark, we wanted to pass along the passing of our beautiful mother, Emilie Benes Brzezinski.”

Reminiscing on a past conversation with her mother, she explained: “When I asked her whether she identified most as an artist, mother or wife, she smiled and said ‘I’m all things at once.'”

Signing the posts off, the presenter referenced her mother’s family nickname Bamba as she wrote: “Forever Bamba – thank you for the BambaTime.”

Mika Brzezinski had previously opened up on her mother’s health

While paying tribute, Brzezinski revealed in recent years her mother had been bravely battling heart disease as well as Parkinson’s disease.

In a 2021 article written by Brzezinski, the journalist explained her mother had survived two heart attacks and had been diagnosed with dementia and Parkinson’s disease.

In the same article, the presenter added she had also relocated to Florida from Virginia during the pandemic. This was so Brzezinski could look after her as her primary caregiver.
