Many don’t know that before the Duchess of Sussex rocked a royal title she sported some scrubs for some episodes in General Hospital, where Meghan Markle got her television start.
Her father was already in the industry, so it appears Meghan grew up spending a lot of time on set, particularly on the series Married…With Children. This is because her father, Thomas Markle, worked as a director of photography on the classic sitcom.
From there Meghan caught the bug for acting and pursued it in college too, earning a degree in theatre and international studies at Northwestern University.
Let’s take a look at Meghan Markle’s extensive acting resume and reminisce on where it all began for the budding actor.
Meghan Markle got her acting start in General Hospital
Many devoted fans may not know that Markle landed her first official role in the world of television on what is known to be America’s longest-running soap. In 2002, Meghan appeared on General Hospital as a nurse named Jill in an episode of GH that aired on 14th November 2002.
Meghan appeared as Jill in two episodes of General Hospital when she was just 20 years old. According to the GH casting director, Mark Teschner, Meghan was initially playing an even smaller part, but they were so impressed by her that they gave her a couple of lines. Teschner told ABC that she was an “under five” actress meaning she had five lines or less, but she did appear in the background of scenes as well.
In the first episode Meghan appeared in, AJ was trying to convince Courtney to give him a second chance after she dumped him. Along with that, an ill Brenda was begging Jason to take her back to Europe because she felt her condition was getting worse. Whilst Alexis confronted Alcazar, about the death of her sister, Kristina which erupted at the hospital, with Meghan’s Jill reacting to the commotion in the background.
In fact, General Hospital has an even deeper tie to Markle and her family; as her parents, Doria Ragland and Thomas Markle, actually met on the set of the soap. Ragland worked as a makeup artist on the show and Thomas was a lighting director.
Meghan Markle has a wealth of credits to her name
Markle is best known for playing Rachel Zane on USA’s Suits as she landed the role in 2011 and remained in the character until the season 7 finale in 2018.
