Is Makka Pakka dead? Theories on the surreal In The Night Garden’s meaning continue to dominate the internet.
In 2017, a Mirror article read, “Iggle Piggle’s dead and Mr Tumble’s a murderer – read this and you’ll never see CBeebies the same way again.”
The piece details all the ways that children’s channel CBeebies is filled with disturbing tales. One of the shows featured in the article is In The Night Garden.
The show has always been noted for its surreal colours and eerie characters, but the article in The Mirror adds a whole new horrifying dimension. According to their theory, Iggle Piggle, one of the main characters of In The Night Garden, is “plainly representing the consciousness of a child in a morphine-induced dream state on the operating table as his life slips away.”

Is Makka Pakka dead?
Makka Pakka wasn’t addressed in the original article detailing the hidden theories behind children’s shows. That hasn’t stopped (mostly adult) viewers of In The Night Garden speculating on what happened to Makka Pakka.
One Twitter user wrote: “I have a subtext theory for Night Garden. Iggle Piggle is a dead sailor, hence why he is blue and starts on a boat adrift. The Night Garden is some sort of purgatory, hence why it is night but always light. Makka Pakka goes round preparing the dead and cleaning”
Another wrote: “But Iggle Piggle is already dead and the whole Night Garden is his dying hallucination as he drifts at sea with no provisions so Makka Pakka is just a hallucination.”
In the CBeebies show, none of the characters are actually dead. However, if we are to view In The Night Garden as some dream state between the worlds of the living and the dead, or even purgatory, then it could be argued that Makka Pakka is also dead.
