The trailer for Netflix’s upcoming crime drama series True Story was released yesterday (Wednesday 27 October). Following its release, some have wondered if the series is based on a true story. We take a look at the new series as some are curious about the show’s inspirations.
What is True Story about?
The seven-episode crime drama follows the story of Kid, a successful comedian who returns to his hometown of Philadelphia during his tour.
Amid his return, he reconnects with his older brother, who joins Kid on an alcohol-fueled night. The next morning the comedian faces the consequences of the evening, which threaten his reputation.
The show’s protagonist, Kid, is portrayed by Kevin Hart, with Wesley Snipes taking on the role of his on-screen older brother Carlton. Hart is also reported to be a producer on the series alongside executive producer Eric Newman.

Is True Story on Netflix based on a true story?
It is unknown if the show’s plot is based on true events, however, it seems the character of Kid is inspired by its actor Kevin Hart.
As the series follows the story of a successful comedian, it’s hard not to draw connections between Kevin Hart and his character. True Story creator Eric Newman recently opened up on how Hart inspired Kid’s character in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
Newman explained: “As I did some research on Kevin, I was struck by how ambitious he is, how vast his empire is, and it dovetails slightly with the theory that I’ve been cultivating for a long time, which is the common sociopathy in really successful people: I believe a lot of them are capable of killing somebody. And I certainly thought Kid as a character would kill to protect what he had built.”
Another parallel some fans of the comedian may notice is that Kid’s hometown of Philadelphia is the same as Hart’s.
