Is Hunter Schafer trans?

Yes, Hunter Schafer is a trans woman.

Hunter uses she/they pronouns and has spoken on North Carolina public radio about her identity. She said: “I do like people to know that I’m not a cis girl because that’s not something that I am or feel like I am. I’m proud to be a trans person.”

Schafer was born on 31 December 1998 in Trenton, New Jersey, and lived with her family between her home town and Arizona before settling in Raleigh, North Carolina. The actor has three younger siblings, two sisters and a brother, while her father is a pastor.

Hunter came out as trans in high school, which she described as “a pretty intense experience”. It also led to their involvement with the ACLU lawsuit against North Carolina’s anti-trans bathroom bill, which revoked a law that banned trans students from using the bathroom matching their gender.

Schafer has spoken on this matter before, telling i-D what inspired their involvement in the case. She said: “As a transgender teenager who grew up in North Carolina, navigating bathrooms on my own was an extremely difficult journey, particularly at public school. In early high school (during a more primary stage in my transition), I felt safer using the women’s restroom and locker room.

Euphoria may have been Schafer’s first acting role but she certainly wasn’t new to the spotlight. Hunter had previously modelled for Dior, Miu Miu, Calvin Klein and Vera Wang. She was also named one of Teen Vogue’s 21 under 21 in 2017 as a rising star in the industry.

The 23-year-old has reprised her role as Jules in Euphoria season 2. The first episode is available to watch now on HBO.

Euphoria character Jules represents trans teenagers

Just like her Euphoria character Jules, Hunter Schafer is a transgender woman. Hunter plays the role of Jules with deep integrity as the actor can relate to their character with honesty. This character has touched the hearts of fans and Jules has become a real representation of trans youth through her struggles on Euphoria

In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Schafer said there is “a lot of” her in her Euphoria character, Jules.

She continued that this helped her get into character and she realised “blurred lines between an actor and a character make a deeper character”.

“The work of an actor is trying to simulate a full life,” Schafer continued. “Some people might say that doesn’t make me as strong an actor, but that’s how I learned.”

Jules regards her gender identity as a small piece of who she is, allowing her storyline to expand on other realities she faces. Jules’ story starts when she begins transitioning at 13 years old. The youngster had the support of her father, which undoubtedly helped the situation as Hunter explains Jules is “pretty young in the scheme of trans people”.

She told Cosmopolitan; “It’s hard to acquire the resources at that age to move forward with that process and be able to recognise all your needs, mentally and physically. I think her dad being supportive allows her to be where she’s at when we first meet her, so it’s pretty vital.”
