Avatar: The Last Airbender

Netflix has set the core cast and creative team for Avatar: The Last Airbender, the live-action adaptation of the beloved Nickelodeon series.

On Thursday, 12 August, Netflix took to Twitter to finally reveal the actors who will be playing Aang, Katara, Sokka and Zuko in the flesh.

Based on the Nickelodeon cartoon, which gained a second life when it dropped on Netflix last year, the live-action series will be showrun, executive produced and written by Albert Kim, who has previously worked on series such as Sleepy Hollow and Nikita.

In a blog post, Kim said he got hooked on the show by watching it with his daughter.

He wrote: “Flash forward 15 years. Netflix offers me the opportunity to develop a live-action remake of Avatar.”

Kim also addressed fans’ major concerns about the new live-action take, following the “whitewashing” that affected M Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender.

Kim said: “A live-action version would establish a new benchmark in representation… This was a chance to showcase Asian and indigenous characters as living, breathing people.

“Not just in a cartoon, but in a world that truly exists, very similar to the one we live in.”

The live-action adaptation was first announced in 2018 and ran into some trouble last year when Avatar creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko stepped away from the project citing creative differences with Netflix.

DiMartino and Konietzko later set up a mini-studio at Nickelodeon to develop their own Avatar series, shorts and movies.

Avatar: The Last Airbender, which aired for three seasons on Nickelodeon, follows the adventures of the main protagonist Aang and his friends, who must save the world by defeating Fire Lord Ozai and ending the destructive war with the Fire Nation.

Gordon Cormier’s age explored

The show will feature Gordon Cormier as Aang, a fearless and fun-loving 12-year-old who just happens to be the Avatar, master of all four elements and keeper of balance and peace in the world.

Gordon Cormier’s age is 11, as noted in his Instagram profile.

Cormier is known for Netflix’s Lost In Space (2019), as well as Stephen King’s adaption of The Stand (2020-21).

He’s repped by Premiere Talent Management and Innovative Artists.
