How old is Ashtray in the Euphoria season 2 premiere?

The Euphoria season 2 premiere has gone off with a bang – The Daily Beast writes that it’s “an orgy of teen sex, bad vibes, and bloodshed” – but how old is Fez’s “little brother” Ashtray in it, and what age is Javon Walton, the actor who plays him?

How old is Ashtray actor Javon ‘Wanna’ Walton?

If Ashtray appears to have aged significantly between seasons 1 and 2 of Euphoria, that’s because two and a half years is a relatively long time for a young teen.

The actor who plays Ashtray, Javon “Wanna” Walton, was born July 23, 2006 – meaning he was only 12 years of age when the first season of Euphoria came out in June 2019.

He turned 13 just under two weeks before the conclusion of season 1 – at which point his character, Ashtray, was 11.

Now, Javon Walton is 15 years old, but how old is Ashtray in season 2 of Euphoria?

Ashtray is described as a preteen – although you wouldn’t guess his age by his pastimes. Given that he was 11 years old in the first season, and season 2 premiered two years after season 1, it seems likely that Ashtray is currently either 12 or 13.

Throughout the first season of Euphoria, Ashtray is intimately involved with Fezco’s drug dealing business. In the season 2 premiere, he attacks Mouse with a hammer – hardly behaviour fitting a 12-year-old.

But both Ashtray and Fez had to mature quickly, at an early age.

What’s Ashtray’s backstory?

Abandoned by his gun-wielding grandmother as a baby – she took him as “collateral” for a drug deal, writes Esquire in its summary of the episode – Ashtray was raised largely by Fez as something like a brother.

But Ashtray and Fezco are not blood relatives. Rather, Ashtray is Fez’s “little buddy” – his “sidekick”, Angus Cloud revealed to Refinery29 in a 2019 interview.

Their lifestyles – and circumstances outside their control – required them to grow up quickly. Ashtray earned his nickname while chewing cigarette butts in the bathtub; when Fez’s grandmother dies en route to the hospital, he and his “little brother” must fend for themselves.

Where else have you seen Javon Walton?

Besides his role as Ashtray in Euphoria, Javon Walton has starred or otherwise featured in Amazon Prime Video streaming series Utopia (as Grant Bishop), and The Addams Family 2 (as Pugsley Addams, replacing Finn Wolfhard).

Later this year, he will appear in Samaritan alongside Sylvester Stallone, Dascha Polanco and Pilou Asbæk.

Javon Walton is a child boxing prodigy. By the age of 10, he had signed a sponsorship deal with Under Armor, making him the youngest member of the company’s roster.

At the age of 11, he had become state champion (Georgia) in boxing and gymnastics – the first person ever to hold both titles. He currently has over 300K followers on his Instagram account, @onwardwanna.
