Earlier this year, How I Met Your Mother (HIMYM) fans were treated to the news that the series would be returning with a spin-off, How I Met Your Father. Original series creators Carter Bays and Craig Thomas confirmed the spin-off to their long-running CBS comedy in a statement to Deadline. The new series will be heading to streaming platform Hulu.
If you weren’t already excited by the prospect of Bays and Thomas working on this new project, you’ll be even more excited when you see the confirmed cast line-up. Let’s take a look at the actors and what roles they will be taking on in this new series.
Meet the cast of How I Met Your Father (2021)
Here are the actors signed on to How I Met Your Father:

Hilary Duff will also be serving as an executive producer on the series. “As a huge fan of How I Met Your Mother, I’m honored and even a little nervous that [HIMYM creators] Carter and Craig would trust me with the sequel of their baby,” Hilary Duff said, per Deadline.
More about the new How I Met Your Father characters
Francia Raisa will take on the role of Sophie’s roommate, Valentina. Valentina, a fashion stylist, has returned to New York from London with a new British beau named Charlie (Tom Ainsley) on her arm. You will have seen Francia Raisa in Grown-ish, where she played Ana Torres.
Uber driver Jesse is played by Chris Lowell. Besides his work as a driver, Jesse aspires to be a musician. He lives with bar owner Sid (Suraj Sharma).
Finally, Jesse’s adopted sister Ellen (played by Space Force’s Tien Tran) will be joining the friends in New York. Ellen moves to the Big Apple from a small farming town after calling it quits with her wife.
As of yet, these are the only confirmed cast members. They are likely to make up the central cast of characters, so expect to be following their lives throughout!

What is How I Met Your Father about?
Following in the footsteps of How I Met Your Mother, the spin-off will largely have the same format. Just as we listened to Ted Mosby (Josh Radnor) tell his children how he met their mother, the new show will hear Sophie (Hilary Duff) as our protagonist and narrator. Sophie will be telling her son the story of how she met his father.
Just as in HIMYM, the spin-off will be set in New York City. We will follow Sophie and her close-knit group of friends as they live their lives in 2021.
One of the major differences we will see for the new cast is that they are dating in an age of social media and apps. Unlike the original, which was set in the mid-2000s and early 2010s, the HIMYM cast had meet-cutes at weddings and in college. For a show predominantly about romantic relationships, this will surely feel like a major change.
