Tim Burton’s Wednesday is finally out on Netflix, adding to the Addams Family library, and fans are wondering who Goody Addams is and how she fits into the spooky, kooky family tree
Addams Family spin-off series Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzman, landed on the streaming site on Wednesday (of course) November 23 – and it’s already a big hit.
The show is packed with characters and creatures Wednesday meets at Nevermore Academy, but it’s the figure she comes across in her visions, Goody Addams, who has fans asking questions.
***WARNING: Spoilers for Wednesday ahead***
Who is Wednesday’s ancestor, Goody?
Goody Addams is an outcast who lived way back in the days of the witch trials in the 17th century.
In the show, Wednesday’s visions explain Goody and her kooky outcast family were hunted during the witch trials, leading to them ultimately being killed by Joseph Crackstone.
However, plot twist, Goody manages to escape and vows to get revenge, which she does when she kills Crackstone and seals him in a casket by using a blood lock.
Goody first appears in Wednesday’s vision in episode 2 during the Poe Cup race.
How does Goody Addams fit into the family tree?
Goody Addams fits into the family tree of the kooky and spooky family as she’s a very distant ancestor to the show’s main protagonist, Wednesday Addams.
The recurring character is the founder of the Nightshade society, which aims to protect outcasts from “normies” seeking revenge.
During her visions, Goody reveals Wednesday is the “key” and is the one who ends up saving her life in the final fight against the resurrected Crackstone
Through Goody’s guidance, Wednesday learns how to control her powers thanks to a necklace her mother Morticia (played by Zeta-Jones) gives her.
The actor who plays Goody might surprise you
It may surprise you to find out the actor playing Goody Addams is none other than the same actor who plays Wednesday Adams – Jenna Ortega.
It seems only right to have the 20-year-old Scream actor playing both roles as the characters have a deep connection through the ages.
Goody manages to save Wednesday when she’s stabbed by the resurrected Crackstone as she combines herself with Wednesday to allow Goody’s spirit to heal the oldest Addams child.
If you can’t get enough of Ortega, she starred in 2021 movie The Fallout and Disney Channel comedy Stuck In The Middle, which ran from 2016 to 2018.
Goody is Addams family’s link to witching history
When it’s revealed the character of Goody Addams was alive during the witch trials in the 1600s, it seems the show is making a familiar link to the real-life Salem witch trials.
The Salem witch trials are behind the origins of the term “witch hunt” when, in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693, more than 200 people were accused of being witches – 30 were found guilty and 19 were hanged.
One of the poor unfortunates was Elizabeth Proctor, who was also known by the name Goody Proctor. Similar to Goody Addams don’t you think? Women were often referred to as “Goody” followed by their last name as it was an informal and shortened version of “Goodwife.”
Just like the Addams outcast, Goody Proctor was accused of being a witch and in 1692 was convicted and executed.
