Foundation on Apple TV Plus

Foundation has finally arrived on Apple TV Plus. The epic sci-fi TV show’s first two episodes landed on the streamer on Friday, 24 September.

Based on a series of novels by Isaac Asimov (whose works have inspired the likes of Star Wars and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy), Foundation tells a centuries-spanning story, following humans across the galaxy living under the rule of the Galactic Empire.

It’s been developed by David S. Goyer, whose previous credits include Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy and Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel.

According to Radio Times, Foundation may well become the next big TV hit on par with Game of Thrones – and provide fledgling streaming service Apple TV+ with their first big-budget blockbuster success.

In keeping with the show’s expansive galaxy-wide scope, Foundation’s globetrotting shoot saw filming take place in Ireland, Malta, Fuerteventura and Tenerife, to create the pause-your-TV-to-contemplate-the-visuals gorgeous fantastical settings.

According to Tech Radar, many established stars and newcomers have been cast for Foundation.

Jared Harris (Sherlock Holmes, The Mortal Instruments) will star as Seldon, the mathematician who the Galactic Empire sees as a threat to the status quo.

Meanwhile, Lee Pace (Lord of the Rings, Guardians of the Galaxy) has been installed as Brother Day, the current Emperor of the Galactic Empire.

Lou Llobell (Voyagers) will star as Seldon’s biographer Dornick, while Finnish actress Laura Birn (The Innocents) will play Demerzel. Additionally, Leah Harvey (Fighting With My Family) will portray Salvor Hardin, the first Mayor of Terminus, whose gender has been altered for the TV series.

Cassian Bilton (Shoal), Terrence Mann (Sense8, Critters), and Alicia Gerrard (Ripper Street) are also joining the cast.

The remaining eight episodes of the series are set to release weekly on Fridays.

Age rating and parents’ guide

The Apple TV+ Original Series is yet to be rated, but Age Rating Juju has suggested TV-MA for violence – which means Foundation was specifically designed to be viewed by adults and therefore may be unsuitable for children under 17.

  • CELEBRITY: Who was Robert Fyfe’s wife and did he have children?

According to the rating website, there is “a lot of violence throughout the series”, as well as the “use of weapons” and “horror scenes [that] can be intense for young viewers”.

On the other hand, there seems to be no alarming nudity or sexual content.

Foundation raises mixed feelings

Since the series premiere, many have taken to Twitter with their take on Apple TV’s new sci-fi show.

And let’s just say, there are some mixed opinions:

It looks like the books’ fans aren’t quite glad about the new take on Asimov’s story – let’s hope Apple redeems itself in the following episodes!
