2018 saw a proposal on stage

At the 2018 primetime Emmys, Glenn Weiss left with an award for Outstanding Directing For A Variety Special and a fiancée. That’s because he proposed to girlfriend Jan Svendsen onstage during his acceptance speech.

He started the speech by talking about his late mother who passed away just two weeks ago, before saying: “Mom always believed in finding the sunshine in things and she adored my girlfriend Jan. Jan, you are the sunshine in my life. And mom was right, don’t ever let go of your sunshine. You wonder why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend? Because I want to call you my wife.”

The audience was over the moon when they knew a proposal was coming, with many attendees ushering his wife up to the stage. That was when Gleiss got down on one knee and said: “This is the ring that my dad put on my mum’s finger 67 years ago.” He proceeded to put it on Svendsen’s finger.

Page Six reported Glenn’s daughters, aged 17 and 21 at the time, were “shocked and blindsided” by the proposal. It seems they wanted a heads up before their dad proposed instead of finding out with the rest of the world.

2008 – when Heidi Klum fell flat on the floor

Heidi Klum left the 2008 Emmys with a painful purple bruise on her thigh. Klum was injured after co-host Tom Bergeron dropped her on the floor during a skit. She pretended to swoon into Tom’s arms but she ended up on the floor in what looked like an unrehearsed drop. The supermodel showed photographers the nasty bruise backstage in a funny picture, with Bergeron smiling beside her.

2017 saw the Sean Spicer cameo

As part of Stephen Colbert’s skit, former White House press secretary Sean Spicer made a cameo at the 2017 Emmys. Donald Trump‘s former spokesman made a joke about the crowd size saying: “This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys, period, both in-person and around the world.”

Zach Braff, Alyssa Milano, Seth Rogen and other stars took to Twitter to share their discomfort at the appearance:

2007 – Sally Field’s unexpected war speech

At the 2007 Emmys, Sally Field’s unexpected war cry during her acceptance speech received resounding applause from celebrities. She recognised the mothers of US troops and dedicated the award to them, asking for the work of mothers around the world to be “valued and raised”.

Field continued: “If mothers ruled the world, there would be no — .“ However, Fox Emmycast cut off her sound and pointed the camera away from the stage, silencing the rest of her sentence: “God-d***** wars in the first place.”

2006 – Helen Mirren confuses with cockney

In the 2006 Emmys, Helen Mirren exclaimed “a** over t**” but producers weren’t quick enough to edit it out or censor it before it aired. While accepting her lead actor award, Helen Mirren exclaimed: “My great triumph is not falling ass-over-tit as I came up those stairs.”

The producers were probably unaware of the common Cockney expression that means “head over heels”.
