Who is actress Janet Hubert’s son, Elijah Isaac Whitten? With the announcement of a Fresh Prince Of Bel Air reunion, the original Aunt Viv, played by Janet Hubert between Seasons 1-3 is back in the spotlight. Amid the frantic fan search for what cast members are up to now, some are interested to know what Elijah Whitten has been doing in the interim, too.
So, what do we know about Janet Hubert’s son?
Who is Elijah Isaac Whitten?
Elijah Isaac Whitten is the son of Janet Hubert and James Whitten, who were married from 1990 to 1994. Elijah is their only child and was born in February 1993.
Hubert was pregnant with Elijah during her last season of Fresh Prince, season 3, which she says led to some “friction” on-set between her and co-star Will Smith.
The actress has opened up in interviews about her relationship with Elijah’s father, James Whitten, which had turned abusive, leading to their divorce in 1994. In USA Today, Janet said: “Home life was not good at all. I was no longer laughing, smiling, joking because there were things going on that nobody knew about.”
This ongoing situation, Hubert recognises, affected her work life on the set of the Fresh Prince as well.
What happened to Elijah?
It seems Elijah like to keep his online life totally private, with no social media profiles easily found. This makes it hard to know what he’s been up to in 2020.
However, in 2018 it was widely reported that Elijah had attempted suicide and his mum, Janet Hubert, blamed Fresh Prince co-star Will Smith for the tragic event.
The original Facebook post has since been deleted, but screenshots have been shared on social media.
The feud between Smith and Hubert was well known and long running, with Hubert claiming Will Smith was the reason she was axed from the show in 1993 due to their struggles working together.
In May 2013, she told omg! Insider that Smith did “some horrible, heinous things” to her.
Fresh Prince Of Bel Air reunion
However, it appears the former co-stars are now (finally) working things out as part of the Fresh Prince reunion.
A photo posted by Will Smith on his Instagram shows the two chatting and smiling together.
During the reunion, Janet Hubert said: “Those words, calling a black woman ‘difficult’ in Hollywood is the kiss of death. And it’s hard enough for a dark-skinned black woman in this business.”
In response, Smith replied: “I could not do a 30-year celebration of this show and not celebrate you, celebrate your contribution to the show, celebrate your contribution to my life.”
Smith explained he regretted his behaviour towards Hubert: “I wasn’t perceptive, and now that I’ve had three kids, I’ve learned some things that I did not know at the time, and I would do things very differently. But I can see where I made the set very difficult for Janet.”
